SAMSUNG MS28 Sammy MS28 comes up as DG16D2S 7485 - HELP PLEASE

Hi all
My buddy gave me his Xbox Phat to sort out. It was previously flashed by another dude and he asked me to update the firmware. Below details:

- Phat Xbox Elite
- Samsung MS28 DVD Drive
- Dashboard 2.0.9199 (something like that - oldish)
- I have X360USB Pro and CK3i Connectivity kit.

First i tried updating the dashboard which gave me errors (via USB, CD). Then when i connected up and opened JF, the drive actually reads as a Liteon DG16D2S - 7485.

I need to flash the Xbox and update dash. From what i have been reading it seems the Sammy MS28 has been spoofed to a Liteon Drive.

Can someone please guide me as to what i need to do to get the dash to update and to flash?
Do i need to revert the drive to a Sammy? If so, i don't have any dvdkeys etc.

Also i read somewhere that once a drive has been spoofed from MS28 to Liteon, then XGD3 games will never work even if you manage to flash?

I have flashed about 60 Phat Xbox's and about 10 Slims already but have never come across a situation like this.

Any assistance/guidance would be much appreciated.

I would suggest pulling the key and putting a lite-on back in it for the best results.

U mean stick a replacement proper Liteon drive in? If so, I don't have any.
Is there nothing i can try?

No you need to put the original drive type to allow updates

Ok i managed to get the drive into Vendor mode by probing MPX01 per JF tut.
Now how do i get the drive to its original MS28 Sammy state?
What do i use as source firmware?

Ur original box came with a Liteon only way to get rid of error with update is put a Liteon drive back in there. What that guy did originally was swap out the Liteon for a Sammy but at least the dvd can be obtained.

So obtain key, get another Liteon flash stock on that new Liteon with your dvd key, place back in console, update, then flash Liteon with LT firmware.

Silly question. If I borrow a Liteon, stick it in and do what u say so that the update can go thru, and then stick the Sammy back in would that work?

You could but there are massive drawbacks.....AP2.5 games would not work as the console would be expecting a response the Samsung can not give, a Lite-on would give it, so no not really, older games may work....CERTAINLY NOT live safe, probably flag the console for a ban. NOT recommended at all.

If you want live then you need to keep a liteon in the xbox

If not bothered then you could put the sammy back but be aware you could get falgged for a ban offline then if you ever in the future go live then there is a chance of getting banned.

Get a lite-on dg-16d2s any FW will do.
Get the sammy into vendor mode and read its FW.
Choose no when asked to autoload FW, and instead load the lite-on pre 13146 original FW from some FW-pack or from xbinz (i think its there).
Spoof the key from old FW to the new, disconnect the sammy and connect your lite-on.
Erase it and the write the FW, after writing just outro it and connect it to your xbox.

I dont think i missed any step, but if i did just correct me. I have done this a few times.

I know your OP was all about the drive...but maybe you want to consider RGH1 before updating dash? RGH would probably work on cheaper than buying new Liteon drive unit or little difference in cost. Then you can use any drive or none at all with a RGH box!

Anyway, if you want to stay stock then if I were you, I would at least update dash to 14179 and then dump your split CB nand so you can use this nand to easily do a RGH2 in the future without any other hardware than a standard coolrunner.

hey again. Got me the replacement LITEON DG16D2S drive....
Following Antals guide there i picked up a problem.

Probe and Intro the Sammy drive comes up in Vendor mode but the flash chip properties giving me weird info:

Vendor ID - 0x2
Device ID - 0x1C
Name - Unknown Type
Size - n/a
Type - Parallel flash with Status 0x70

When i try and read it states Unknown flash type read aborted

HELP please....

New lite on working perfect, dash updated successfully and flashed to lt3.
