I have an ASRock K7S8XE motherboard which has SATA onboard but the problem is the SATA is only for RAID, I have looked in the BIOS on the internet and I don't think you can make the SATA IDE.

If I buy a SATA PCI Card would this work!!! or would the onboard SATA interfere?

If you install a 3rd party PCI SATA card and then remove all of the SATA leads from the on-board SATA controller you will have no problems.

Make sure you have the correct drivers for the PCI SATA card and only use the internal connectors on it. Don't try to use the external ones as these will not work.

Yes that will be fine just ensure you install the latest drivers and at install don't install the RAID config just the drivers.

So I installed my VT6421A tonight, connected up the 360 and nothing happens, if I look in Device Manager under 'SCSI and RAID Controllers' it says 'VIA-VT6421A Raid Controller' does anyone know how to change the SATA so its IDE, I have installed the drivers so I can't see the problem!
Any advice would be appreated.

Thanks

Lex

The 6421 will work great for Samsungs but it does not work with Slax to get the older Hitachi drives in Mode B, which is required to read/write Hitachi firmware. If your main goal is Hitachi you should probably look into returning that card and getting one with an SIL or Nforce chipset since they are more compatible with the v46/47/59 Hitachi drives. Or, if your goal is being able to do all drives you should keep that card and add another one with the SIL or Nforce chipset.

6421 = Samsung and Hitachi 78
SIL/Nforce = Hitachi 46/47/59

I also bought a 'Xecuter 360 Connectivity Kit' which is being shipped from China at the moment, do you that would be sort out my problems for the Hitachi?

OK, that should work. You'll need to use the Connectivity Kit to get the Hitachi into Mode B and then assuming Windows sees your drive you can flash using the 6421 from there. But getting Windows to see the older Hitachis through a 6421 is a hit-and-miss process, it works with no problem for some while it drives others crazy.

Read Textbook's tutorial carefully, in particular from page 57 on since that's what deals with the procedure you'll be doing. ;)

The VIA vt6421A will work with older Hitachi drives to get them into mode B try and do your research and ensure they are downloading the latest version of slax.

I upgraded to Windows VISTA and could then see the Hitachi Drive, I then flashed the drive with a 360 Connectivity Kit and all is now working, my advice to anyone having problems detecting the drive is upgrade to VISTA.
