serious help needed with Xbox HD

Was modding an Xbox for my Uncle. Everything goes fine until I go to put his stock HD back in. With it in, the Xbox FRAGs at bootup. Error code 6, or 7. I apologize I can't remember which, I'm at work:( Anyway, I put my stock HD in it's place and the Xbox boots fine. Not sure what happened with his but I thought I had a workaround. Ever the curious one, I connected his HD to my compuuter hoping to copy it's contents onto my PC HD, then connect my old drive and copy the contents that way. Deal is, his HD shows up in device manager but not "My Computer". I read I may have to fdisk it, but this will erase everything, correct? Any other way to extract all the old data? He has buttloads of saved data on here, I would really hate to lose.

Any help would HIGHLY be appreciated. The HD was never locked or anything like that. Don't know why it went down but if I can get all the stuff off it, it won't matter.

No suggestions? I was thinking because maybe this Xbox came out of a 1.6 box, you need to put it in another 1.6 box. Let's just say that's not true. I really am looking for miracle here so ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated.
