Thanks to the excellent & invaluable info on this site I've flashed my brand new 360 Hitachi v59 and am happily playing backups. :D

I quite fancy going on Xbox live to download demos etc - When I go on it says I need to download updates before I can start. My firmware is 2.0.2858.0. Does downloading these updates pose any sort of threat to my modded machine?

The last thing I want is to brick it just for the sake of a few demos etc.

I know this was probably a stupid question - but I heard that one of the earlier firmware upgrades caused some problems with modded machines and this got me worried.

No, at this moment updates are fine to accept. Potentially in the future, if/when ms implements a check for hacked firmwares, then it will become an issue.

The only error thus due to upgrades is E66. MS implemented a check to see if your drive version was the same as what was originally in your box. So, if you originally had a v47 hitachi and replaced it with a v59 hitachi, you would get this error. This was easily fixed by replacing the version strings in your current firmware to match the original in your box.
