Hi all, i just RGH'd my slim. It seems to be working fine except there is no power going to the hdd. The DVD drive is still working fine tho, as i've read some problems affect both the DVD and HDD. If i plug the hdd into my PC PSU for power, and connect the data cable to the 360, the 360 detects the hdd and works as it should, so the sata port on the 360 mobo is working OK. I have double checked, and all cables are in the right places and connected correctly.

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere. I have searched and found 2 similar posts, however, 1 is unanswered, and the other was solved by changing the power supply which i cant do as i dont have a spare.

I didn't do the soldering myself, but i cant see anything obviously wrong with it. I wouldn't really know what to look for anyway.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Measure the socket - if doesn't provide the required voltage the HDD won't start, also there are rare HDD that require more current, which the console can't provide.

As above posted said, however just to confirm is this a Microsoft brand XBOX 360 Slim hard drive or ????

Check the sata/power cable for damage, bent pins, etc. Also make sure the sata cables are installed to the correct ports.

I've actually managed to fix it now. I removed all the screws and took the mobo out of the metal housing. I started the 360 and the hdd had power and was detected straight away. So i started to assemble the 360 again bit by bit, checking the hdd was still getting power. I put all the screws back in, tested it, and no power again.

In the end i had to leave out the little 2 screws that go either side of the block of USB/AV ports.

When these screws were in, the mobo was squashing the coaxial cable tightly. Without the screws, its not squahing it quite as much (still quite tight tho).

I have no idea why squashing the coax cable could kill power to the hdd socket, or if it was just a coincidence, but leaving these screws out has fixed my problem.

Cheers for everyones help anyway.

Likely the grounded shielding is bad and bridging on the chassis causing a "short", which happens to effect your hard drive power for some reason. Your cable looks iffy, it should look something like image below. It would be a good idea to replace that cable and route it properly.

Hi mate. What do you mean by route it properly. Isnt it routed the same as in the pic you posted, apart from being a bit shorter?

Cheers

Well, I can't see the bottom of the board but I suspect the installer used the full cable and did not cut it to length, the shorter the better, secured to the side with hot glue. The way it looks in your picture it appears the hdd bay cannot be installed correctly.

I know this is an old thread but I recently encountered this same exact issue with a Proto V2 install and based on the images above I believe I have identified the exact root cause.
It appears that the shielded cable has been punctured by the back side of the HDD power header and is causing a short and a failure for the header to provide power.
This has everything to do with placement of the shielded cable, see my images below outlining where the cable was originally located, where I moved it to and how the cable was punctured.
I hope this helps someone.
--Beware shielded cable placement --
(Additional Note) This also explains why when the CO55Y loosened the screws that hold the motherboard down that the HDD started working again, there was less pressure from the motherboard cage pressing the cable into the back side of the header and stopped shorting the header out.
