Console: Xbox 360 Slim
Kernel: Latest
Console Type: Retail (no modding history)
Problem: When the xbox is on, it will randomly beep like someone is touching the power or eject buttons, and occasionally turning off (it beeps, but nothing happens, so if the eject beep occurs, it doesn't eject, and if the power beep happens, it doesn't always power off, only occasionally, it does). I have noticed that when you turn it back on, the resolution (on HDMI) switches from 1080p (where it was set) to 480p. also while this is happening, the faceplate is completely unresponsive to touch
Recent changes: Moved console and TV from home to college dorm room
Repair methods attempted: switching inputs on the tv, checking power supply light color (stays green if on and orange when off, so normal), cleaning faceplate, re-seating the faceplate ribbon cable, cleaning it internally.

The only other ideas i have would be some sort of inadequate power here in the dorm, i'm headed home this weekend, so i'll bring it home to test if it works there or not. I also thought the faceplate may be faulty, and in that case, i have a spare back home. i just find it odd that it stopped working right after the location change. it was very well padded around blankets in a box.

Any ideas from the experts?

I hope its just a rf or cable issue for you. I had a trinity come in a while back with this very issue, I tried everything and was ready to give up. Then for the hell of it, I replaced the south bridge and it worked like new again. So it turned out to be a bad south bridge for me the last time I saw this. Probably a very rare case I had, since it quit working for you after a move I'd try a different faceplate and RF.

i had this issue on a console also, it turned out that the ribbon cable from the RF board to the buttons was damaged.

replaced the cable and it worked perfectly again.

Thanks for the replies! When i go home this weekend, ill try replacing the faceplate and RF board, and i'll report back here once i determine if that fixes the issue.

Make sure the power plug is pushed all the way into the Xbox.

You never know how much HF interference is running through the electrical circuit that you share with others in the dorm. You might try plugging the Xbox into a UPS to filter/condition the AC from the wall.

If none of the above worked, (Its normally the Ribbon) clean the touch buttons with a little window cleaner and a soft cloth... Problem solved...

yea, my dad is into electrical systems, and he recommended to try that before replacing anything, although i don't think we have a spare ups, and don't exactly have the money to buy one :p do you think something like a surge protector would work as well?

(i have checked the power cable at all connections multiple times)

A surge protector won't help with HF interference or brownouts (low voltage). Without a UPS, you can take your Xbox to a good power source to narrow it down.

Does anyone else in the dorm have an XBox that is behaving in a similar manner? There could be a room or two with cleaner AC.

Just my two cents but I do know that the process to take alternating current voltage (AC) and turn it into a direct current voltage (DC) is nasty business. If one was to only use a rectifier circuit to achieve this then the DC voltage would be very dirty and not fit to use on sophisticated electronics. To get around that, they ad filters, voltage regulators, etc.. That is all built into your power supply. My point is, I doubt it has anything to do with any interference. You would see other signs of it before the Xbox started acting up. Such as visual noise in the TVs/computer monitors, buzzing in radios, etc. Your probably is most likely a bad ribbon cable or a faulty SB.

Edit: Most UPSs and surge suppressors don't do sh*t for noise or interference filtering. UPS is just a battery backup and a surge suppressors does just that. Surpresses surges. Nothing more.

U.K.
I doubt its noise but when I was at college if they used more than 2 tig welders at once they would take out the nearest pc class room! Tho if was a fair few years ago!!!! Used to make welding class more fun tho.
