Its always advised to do this, although I didn't with my Live safe slim. With the last two updates, and it had no effect on my firmware.Might be worth putting the drive back to the stock f/w for the dash you were on, then try to do the update again.
Im aware of the dos and donts, however you dont know what dash the xbox was on. It could be as simple as a bad download from MS. Try downloading the USB version and trying that.
