Slim with no video or rdod

So a customer brought me a slim xbox 360 with no video output on hdmi and av.

I have not received a slim for this kind of repair before, so I thought I'd better ask here before attempting a reflow.

So the customer said it started turning itself off with the red dot, then it would work again for about 5 minutes and repeat the cycle, as per my experience with phat consoles, I assumed at this time, that was caused by bad contact between the heatsink and the cpu/gpu. I assume this is correct and the repeated use of the console in this state has caused the current problem, no video output.

I plan to reflow it as I would a phat console (with the exception of the new combination gpu-cpu chip and the heat-spreader that's now added, I'm assuming removing this would be essential as to keep the heat transfer optimal.

Notes:
Controllers do sync when I try, appear to work fine, however with no sound or video, I cannot tell if they are in fact working or not.

I heard a rumor about removing the 4GB module, tried it and it didn't result in any change

So far I have the board bare and ready to reflow using proper equipment, just wanted to ask some questions beforehand.

Does anybody have experience with slims and gpu cold solder problems?
If somebody does please post some tips thanks.
John

Sounds like a cold solder joint under the GPU I would recommend reballing it

Thanks for your reply.

I will do a reflow as I do not have a stencil for this chip. I will post back results tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply.

I know about the experts here, I would reball, but I do not have a stencil for this chip.

I was really seeking info on about removing that heatspreader safely, reattaching it I can do.

Don't bother removing the heatspreader, I've never once done so over quite a few reflows/reballs. You won't have any issues getting up to temp, might have to run a dwell for an extra twenty or thirty seconds at your regular preheat temperature but otherwise it's just like reflowing a phat GPU, use a 41x41 nozzle if you're running hot air, 45x45 might be even better but from what I recall the 41mm nozzle fits more than comfortably.

@NoFel, PM me a price for one of those stencils if you could? Mine are STILL lost in transit and I can't be bothered ordering from China again.

Ok thanks for the info wolf.

I'm doing the reflow now, I will post back with results as soon as it cools down and I test it.

Update Status:

Well, it has not successfully been repaired yet, still no video output nor any red lights.

I am simply performing the reflow then resting a gen2 xbox 360 phat heat sink on the cgpu to test and connecting the RF module and power assembly to turn it on, just thought I'd mention that in case the video output issue could also be for some other reason.

I reflowed the RAM, HANA and CGPU so far, not sure what to try next...

Any Ideas anybody?

Never thought to ask..does it show you the normal 'green ring' on the ROL like when a console boots successfully? If not, are you sure it's not had an ECC/glitch image flashed and then had the CR removed? And have you reflowed the SB yet?

The normal green ring (spinning around) never happens, just the dot in the middle.

I will flash the south bridge next, the SB chip does get warm to the touch so I would assume its at least getting power.

The warranty seal was in-tact, its a 2010 model with a hitachi drive (1st time I have ever seen the slim hitachi btw), it appears no RGH was ever done, everything looks untouched.

It appears something may have been spilled, there are some brown spots on the bottom of the motherboard, but it could just be flux from the several reflow attempts, I cleaned it and it still is the same.

Just checking the easy way out, I used this power supply and AV cord on my slim, and confirmed they work also, so still no idea.

EDIT::::

I forgot to mention that, the toslink (optical) is on, also after that cleaning I did, the dot stopped rapidely blinking (due to drive not been connected) for about 10 seconds then rapidly blinked in a continence as normal with dvd drive no connected.

Just thought to add that, it may be useful...

On a phat console your last symptom sounds like a southbridge fault, so I'd definitely focus on that, even going as far as to replace it from a Jasper or another Trinity, I believe Jasper southbridges are identical to those on the Trinity boards. If needed I have several here I could mail you for the price of the padded envelope they go in.

New Update:

I just received another xbox 360 with the exact same problem.

Its a phat HDMI box, I managed to repair this one 1st try with my standard reflow routine, I reflowed the GPU even though it did appear to be a SB issue.

Some weird results in this repair though;
The console powers on, one solid green dot in the middle, it never boots, or the green lights never do the all round thing.

After reflow:

The rapid blinking of the green dot comes back (due to missing DVD drive), system took a while, about 30 seconds, did nothing, I powered off, powered on again, it worked.

For the most part I re-assembled the xbox, everything except the case basically, it did the same again, single solid dot, never load.

I remove the DVD drive, then try again, rapid blinking dot, and a load.

I add the DVD drive back, normal boot, ever since, a normal boot.

I'm not sure if any of the above info may be useful for the situation with the slim I have, but I thought I'd post it as this slim I have has a rare issue going on that nobody seems to know much about.

Thanks,
John.

Just took some snap shots of some possible causes of the issue.
