Slow Dashboard and Other

Okay, first a little history. I bought a broken xbox with hopes of fixing it. It looked like it was attempted to mod it before. Upon boot up with no chip in it would come up with the "xbox need service" error with no error code number. This is a version 1.0 xbox. So I figure, hell, Ill try to put a chip on it. I first tried to do a wire install, but the bottom left lpc point had some solder that would not heat up like the others would and i could not get the wire in that well. So then i desolder all the holes so I can use a pin header. I have to take out the pin for that hole and force it in the hole by heating up the old solder, while I push it in. Then i am able to get the others in. I solder all the holes with the pin header installed. Put the chip on, and it worked. 2.6 chip installed. I put a hdd from a working unit and the dash (evox) is super slow. I launch a game (Advent Rising) and the game works fine. I reboot, dash is slow. I launch an emu and it works fine. I replace cable and put a new drive in. I launch the cd that formats the drive and it took FOREVER to format the drive and copy the files. I reboot and of course the dash is slow. Very wierd problem. With chip off it still give error screen with no code. Any help or comment would be welcome.

Maybe your hard drive is unlock that's why you're getting the "service required message" with no error code...that happened to me before and I did not suspect that my hard drive was unlock because I'm not getting a #5 error code...give it a try, it might work! :)

Its definately not the "not locked" problem. I have treid it with the hard drive unlocked and locked as well. I think it is something with the eeprom or a bad ide controller. I am going to try some more games out and see how they work.

What do you mean the dash is slow? When you are playing games, are they off a disc, or the drive?

In evox, the menu is super slow, the rotating logo is like a slide show. It takes around 5 seconds to go from one menu item to the next. The games are on the hard drive. I also notice that the Lan light on the switch stays on, and there is no cable in the jack (not attached to the network). I tried several other games and they work fine. Very wierd.

Also, In FlashBios when ORIGINAL hdd is hooked up, I get "Unable to read HDD first sector getting partition table"

Known good hdd out of another xbox does not get error.

Also, no link lights on board when network cable is installed no matter if chip is off, on, or in FlashBios.

Probably a bad board, but is real funny that the game work fine from the hdd.

One other thing, it looks like other dashboards dont have a problem. Avalaunch loads fine and so does XBMC. I guess I could set up one of those dash's and use it as a stand alone box with no network connectivity. Would suck though, since all of my games and apps are on hdd's. Maybe over the weekend, I will take out the board and go over it with a fine tooth comb and look for some solder splashes before I give up on it.

That's wierd that only EvolutionX is slow. Are you sure you soldered the LAN wire to the right place?

Well, I guess I had some solder touching another trace on either the lan point or the ide point, as thats the only ones that I re-did. Now evox is good to go and the lan picks up an ip addy.

Now, any ideas on how to get the microsoft side to work? You think it is a bad eeprom?

Nevermind, it works as well, guess the solder splash affected that as well. Thanks to all that replied and tried to help.
