I installed, or tried to install an X3 in my friends box right, and so i get it all hooked up and everythign and when i turn it on its starts to boot but i notice that as soon as a i turned it on, a little stream of smoke strated comming off from somewhere in the area of the chip. i immeditatly turned it off before checking where it came from. i messed up on the soldering a bit, three of the pin headers touched toghter, but i didnt fix that i just left it to see if it would work, and i also taped the D0 on with electrical tape instead of soldering it down. besides that i did everythign right. any idea what the smoke could be from

Whenever the smoke leaks out, bad things happen. See this link for the connection between smoke and electroincs.

This needs to be posted as a sticky as a warning on how to perform an extreme **** up of SOMEONE ELSES Xbox. Hey at least it wasn't your Xbox right ;)

Based on your other posts you really should step away from the soldering iron, and practice on something first ... or is this a practice before trying to mod a PS2?

I had the same similiar problem; smoke comming from the x3 chip first time I turned on the xbox. Now however, I had done --no soddering whatsoever--. I was using the xapt3r and without soddering any lan/hd leds. So even though it may have been caused by your soddering, it just might be a faulty chip.

My chip continued at least to light up and frag, but since then I've reconnected the trace (however nobody has still told me whether or not I reconnected the right pins http://www.teamxecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11097) and ditched the xapt3r after messing with it for a few more hours. X3 then works except for turning on xbox by simply plugging in the xbox.

Examine your x3 chip and see if any traces were lifted. If it was the same as my previous thread; you might not have done anything word.

the guy soldered 3 points togeher, and taped down his D0, THEN, without fixing it, turned it on, If there wasnt a problem with the chip, there bloody well will be now.
