Hello. I'm fairly new to SX OS, and I created a backup .xci file from my Mario Kart game card. When I try to launch it, however, it says a software update is needed. I do not want to turn on the WiFi, since I was one of those who had it auto-update the FW from 6 to 7. Is there a way to play the game without updating? If not, how do I safely update without getting FW updates or having my Switch banned, etc? Thanks for any and all help.

All FWs are currently supported. You can use this guide to update to 7.0.1 and see if the message goes away. If not then it is most likely looking for a game update. Unfortunately, game updates are sort of a grey area as far as piracy talk on the forum, so that's about as much as I can give you.
just choose Start Software or something is that if there is a choice to choose, there is no need to install the game update if you don't want to
Unfortunately, there are only two choices, Download or Cancel. Canceling does not allow me to play. It just goes back to the main screen.
Everytime I have run into the "DL or cancel only" issue it has been because the game needed a higher firmware version than my switch was currently on. Updating my switch firmware always fixed the issue for me.
that means you had installed the game update before, now it also needs to install the game update before you could play it
He is on 7.0 from his first post. 7.0.1 would still be using the same master_key. So while FW can be an issue, it seems that the game itself might be an update. Unless he is not actually on 7.0.x yet.
@botoichibon easiest way to test would be like I mentioned above and update using Choi to 7.0.1 and see if the message goes away. If not, then you need a game update. Alternatively you can try deleting the game and then game data from the Settings menu and reinstall the game. Backup your save file first though!
You are correct, my current FW version is 7.0. I verified this again in the settings.
I will try the Choi method if deleting the game and game data does not succeed.

Well, I deleted the game and the game data, and then, I upgraded the FW to 7.0.1 with Choi. I still have the the same message. I assume the game needs updating.
Is there anything I can do now? Also, will this mean I have to connect to the internet even if I own the actual game card?

Can't be caurse of that OP is getting the msg, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe latest update is 1.7.1 released Januar 26 2019 and are signed with masterkey 3 according to XCI Explore 1.4.4
If that's the case then something in 7.0.x is looking for the game to be updated. I have not tested Mario Kart and I have not updated to 7.0.x yet since nothing I am playing currently needs it. If I update soon I can test that game specifically.

if you had installed any game update before, it will not allow you to run the game until you install the game update again
Hmm...Guess I'm stuck then. I don't want to turn on Wifi and have something update accidentally, preventing me from using my SX Pro
Getting banned will not stop you from using SX Pro and the current FW 7.0.1 is supported. Other than getting banned nothing will happen by having wifi on. You can also turn it on, try to update and then turn it off again. Just google the updates. I am sure you can find them offline. That's about all I can say since updates are a grey area as far as piracy.
Just a little update from my testing, optantic is right, if you privous have had installed updates for this game, it won't run without, not even if you uninstall the update
Just made a complete factory wipe of my Switch, and made a new emunand on another SD, console on OFW 6.1.0 and emunand 7.0.1, both are now running the game without the update, but my old emunand that have had the update installed before, but now uninstalled won't run without installing the update again

This might be a moot point at this time now that the Nintendo FW was released, but before the recent FW update, I turned on the WiFi and tried to update the game software. I received a message saying something about a server error. It wouldn't update at all. I still can't play it. Any ideas to why there was an error? I guess I want to know if this is a common thing and just a simple Nintendo server being offline for repair, etc, or is this something more serious (like a ban). Thanks
If you are trying to update a game while booted to CFW, it will most likely not work because of Stealth Mode. That blocks nintendos severs. Of course connecting to nintendos servers while booted to CFW is asking to be banned.
