Don't hold the soldering iron on the board too long and don't use very much solder. Also use a low wattage iron. And don't use much pressure.

ya, make sure the iron is about 15-20 watts, if you use higher, then you might melt the factory solder and maby bump a surface mounted capacitor off the board like i did to my old xbox (which is now just a big paperweight) not to scare you or anything, the factory solder melts at a higher temp than solder you buy in the store. I was using a 45 watt iron.

Take it to someone that knows what they are doing. It's better to pay somebody to do it than fu*king it up and your old man getting pi*sed. ;)

like he said, a 15 watt iron with a fine tip. use small diameter solder and flux.
i use this iron: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F011%5F009%5F007%5F003&product%5Fid=64%2D2055

and i used .022 dia. rosin core silver-bearing solder.

make sure your hand isn't too shaky, relax. study the pieces and areas your going to solder. these points are tiny but don't be afraid.

take apart an old electronic gadget you don't need anymore that has fine small areas like the xbox and practice on it first.

follow the install guides here to exactly to the word.

it really isn't as hard as most people here make it out to be, but it is a precise task.

i hope this helps you and GOOD LUCK!

NOOOOO. Don't use a soldering gun - they get way too hot.
Get a low watt soldering iron with a fine tip. A trip to RadioShack willlet you find what you need (also some fine solder - 0.022 rosin core)

I have a 50w soldering iron that I use to work with. Is that to much?

You can also practise on buying some small beginner kit with wires, leds and some chips, then when its done and everything works you have also increased your confidence in soldering :)

That just depends on your experience. You can have as much wattage as you want as long as you know how to use it. Wattage doesn't necessarily mean how hot it gets, but how much heat capacity there is. Inexperience plus a 50w iron can destroy an xbox faster than you can say xecuter rox my box... literally ;)
