OK, just so I don't get jump on, I am a deployed soldier in Afghanistan. I am trying to finish my mod on my xbox. And I don't have that much time to get on the net to find all my answers. Plus it seems everyone has a different combinatin of parts installed so I don't know which will work for me.

Here is the skinny. I have a v1.6 xbox, installed the x3 chip, flashed the 1959 bios through http, connected to xbox with flashfxp, backed up all partions on laptop, now trying to install a western digital 250gb hard drive.

My question is, with me having the 1959 bios do I need to have evol too? I saw under the config menu it has an area to pick options for new hard drive and lba48 option too. When I first connected the new hard drive and powered up the dash froze on me and I got an error 7. Then I reinstalled my stock drive, power up w/ chip enabled got to the format screen for new hard drive and tried a hot swap, where it now freezes at "press Y to continue format". Powered down xbox and powered up again, dash freezes again, but now with an error 9 message.

WTF do I do now. I am about to say the hell with it and just use my stock.

Oh, and does it mean my new hdd is FUBAR when it makes a wierd sound when it tries to power up?

If anyone can help, I would be most thankfull.

1)take out stock hdd
2)put in new hdd
3)power on xbox in the x3cl menu
4)go to drive settings
5)go to new drive
6)say format new drive
7)go to current drive settings
8)format all partitions
9)flash files from stock drive to new drive
10)enjoy

even for a soldier in afganistan, i think you could have used the time making that post to find a hdd swapping tutorial. honestly, i figured it out myself without a tutorial at all.

Ok if I am not mistaken. Didn't I say I did that already?????
My problem is the freezing and the errors not the HOW TO...

Check the jumper on your hdd. It needs to be on Cable Select. When I swapped mine, I initially got Error 7. I rejumpered and that fixed my issue.

I would check that first. Check out the N00b Survival Guide linked in my sig, It shows the procedure with some pretty pics.

Hope that helps, and thank you for your sacrifice.

youre not supposed to hot swap. just do exactly what i said.

and your dash froze because you didnt have any dash files on the hdd.

Ok, checked to see if it was in cable select and it was.

And how would I get dash files to a hdd that I can't even hook into yet???
I might be a noob, but explain that one...

To get the dash files on the new hdd, start your xbox with the new drive in. Make sure its formatted in x3cl. Then ftp to your xbox while still in x3cl. username and pass are both x3. ftp your old hdd backup over to the new one. thats it, your done, have fun

You guys aren't actually reading the posts here, are you...

Ok man, I'm with you. The error code 7 happens BEFORE you get to the x3cl screen, and therefor CANNOT format the drive, and CANNOT put the dash on, etc. etc....

(that was reiteration so everyone else reading this thread can clue in)

As far as helping... error 07 is for a HDD timeout. For me, this problem happened (1) when the jumper was set wrong (which you already checked) and (2) when the cable wasn't securely connected to either the drive or the mainboard.

Double, and triple check those two things and see if you can get past the HDD timeout error. Let us know how it goes.

Right - was in a hurry and forgot to mention that error 9 is:

9 - kernel - HDD parameters (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug)

(taken from http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/errorcodes.php )

Not sure how to get past that one, but I would try to get it working with the stock drive again (so you can see x3cl), turn it off, plug in the new drive, turn it back on, and see what happens. Basically, to see if you get the error 7 again instead of the 9. Interesting issue. I didn't start having these issues til something happened to my eeprom and had a locked drive issue... fun stuff.

Again, good luck, keep us up to date.

Also, glad you are taking the time to get some halo2 action on while over seas. You guys rule.

it sounded to me like he was getting the error 7 because he tried to boot a dashboard on an hdd that didnt have one. i suppose i could have misread it though.

FIRST OFF, yeah there are more important things to do in Afghanistan, I spend most of my time here working on Blackhawk Helicopters, I only mod my xbox on my personal down time, so there. Thanks to everyone for actually reading my posts that tried to help.

Ok, I made sure new was on cable select and made sure cable was secure, replaced stock hdd and everything was fine. Powered down, replaced to new hdd. Powered on, got to flubber screen, (which I changed with chip) after XBOX came on, I didn't see Xecuter Rox my BOx, or anything it just freezes there then I get the error 7 message.

If anyone out there can help me figure this one out and get my xbox working right, I will send you a token of thanks from Afghanistan.

I can't help with your mod, as my chip just got here today. It's up and running, so there's no reason to start tweaking stuff yet.

However, I just wanted to say thanks for serving, and be careful.
