Spare Drive for updates?

I have a phat 360 elite with a liteon drive flashed with lt3 and everything is working fine.
I am just wondering if instead of flashing to stock for every update I can simply buy a spare drive (same type) and spoof it with my drive details (stock firmware) so that when updates come out I can simply swap drives, update & swap drives back without any need for reflashing?

Sorry if it's a noob question but all the guides I can find are for flashing different drives for replacement not for simply having a spare with stock firmware on it.
