I am looking in to buying a harddrive in exchange of my 20 gig. I have a rgh console.
what would you guys guys do?
any benefits of ssd in a phat console?
or can the phat 360 even process information that fast?
any suggestions?
it might be over kill over the expense. but i dont own many games so the space is not much of an issue

I know it's been proven that using a 10,000rpm Raptor in both phat and slim consoles cuts down game load times and such, I've never actually seen numbers for an SSD but I've been thinking about trying it myself for a few months. Just can't find one with enough room that isn't outrageously expensive, as I tend to have 200gb or more of content on my drive at any given time. i saw that you where in the US
i know that fry's is kinda cheap store down there for electronics.
i dont know if this could help, but i get my hard drives ect from a site that from canada called ncix. i will not post a link because i dont want to cause an infringment
with ncix you pay around 1dollar per gig(sometimes not even) for a ssd drive, under 250gig
i did not need a big hard drive so its not too expensive if i gain performance.
do you know anyplaces cheaper than fry's or even ncix to buy hard drives ect.

These huge cpu coolers always give me a boner. Good price for that beast PC.

As Über said, SSD in a 360 is pointless, since it won't improve visible performance. It's silent, but please...

when i was placing my order i asked for free shipping after the price matches, and the agent told me that they where not even making 1% profit on the deal but if i bought the heat sink they would give me free shipping, value of heat sink 70 or 80 bucks and the shipping was 60$
so the shipping cost 20$$
:p

I think you would throwing your money away. I'm sure there are more bottle necks on the xbox than the hard drive.

A scorpion should be more than enough.

Xbox360 = Sata1 it's pointless to use an SSD with Sata1
Sorry for reviving this old thread, but today I had the chance to test an SSD, and what I found will have Ubergeek and miragui eating their words.

I installed a LiteOn M3S 128 GB SSD into my RGH'd console and so far I've only tested GTA V, but the differences in load times were quite significant:

Loading story mode (when starting the game; after the disclaimer screens disappear)

Retail XBox Drive: 27 seconds
SSD Drive: 7.5 seconds

Switching Characters

Retail Drive: 14-20 seconds
SSD Drive: 8-11 seconds

As you can see, installing an SSD drive can reduce wait times considerably, even with "only" a SATA-1 controller.

I may try a couple more games, but the drive belongs to my brother so I'll have to return it pretty soon. Needless to say, I'll be on the hunt for my own SSD.

For SSD technology? Not really... while it's true that read/write speeds continue to improve over time, the LiteOn drive I borrowed was from a Dell laptop that was manufactured back in January.

the hardware doesnt utilize the benefit of SSD storage.
Considering what I found with my early tests above, I have to disagree. The load times when starting GTA V were reduced by nearly 75%. I anticipate other games with heavy disk utilization to be significantly reduced (e.g. loading races in Forza 4, loading stages various FPS, etc.)

You didn't state what model HDD you had in your retail caddy?
I haven't cracked open the HDD caddy yet. It's the drive that came with the first batch of XBox slim models in late 2010.

Look guys, I'm not saying that everybody should rush out and buy an SSD for their consoles. It's just that comments like "SSD = Pointless" really irked me, especially when they came from an Administrator who didn't back up his claim. I spent a fair bit of time yesterday performing the HDD swap, and the end result turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The hardware does benefit from this upgrade.

If you're happy with your console's current performance, then by all means stick with your current drive. However, since I have no plans to pick up a next-gen console anytime soon, and I have a significant number of games that I haven't even started playing yet, I'm seriously thinking of upgrading my console with an SSD. Also, thanks to my benefits plan at work, I can even claim the drive through my Wellness spending account .

Cheers,

Okay, so I've had more time to play with the SSD in my XBox. However, the significant improvements I found with GTA V have not translated into the same improvements with other games. Much to my dismay, the load times for other games were improved by only a second or two. I find this perplexing, and the only explanation I can think of is that the programmers purposefully put in a pre-determined wait period based on the performance of their mechanical hard drives.

So is an SSD "pointless"? Well, it would depend on what percentage of games out there don't have this pre-determined wait time. I tried CoD: Ghosts, Forza 4, NFS: Rivals, and Tomb Raider, but they were all only a second or two faster to load. I'm sure there are games out there that can reap the performance of an SSD, but at this point it's really a crap-shoot. :p

All I can say is I'm glad I was able to borrow my brother's SSD to test this theory. At any rate, it looks like I'll be sticking with my mechanical drive. :(

Happy Holidays,
