Starting from scratch. What do I do?

I've read all over this site and I'm just completely lost for words. I guess I'm so much of a noob that I don't even know enough of the lingo to understand what I'm reading.

I'll try to be as clear as possible so anyone that responds will know how to answer.

I have a 1.6b version original XBOX with an X3 CE chip installed. I'm pretty sure it's the CE version, becuase it came with that extra chip that makes the soldering less cumbersome ... right?

Anyway, I soldered in the chip about a year ago, and my friend was going to do the rest. Well that never happened, so now I have my xbox with the chip installed, and not the slightest clue of what to do next.

When I boot the XBOX everything works like its supposed to. It goes to the MS dash board OR the new flash bios screen depending on what is selected. I don't remember what the xbox is supposed to do when which chip is set to what position. But I do know that last year when I installed it, everything worked like the tutorials said it should.
Once I completed this task, I gave the xbox to my friend and he didnt' do squat with it. So now it's back in my hands and I have to do the rest.

I still have the original XBOX hard drive in it, but I have a 250GB Maxtor that I want to use.

So is there any way someone can give me a step by step process for 1. unlocking the hard drive. 2. flashing a new bios? and 3. actually installing the aftermarket software?

I'm assuming I have to get the xbox hooked up to my computer somehow. But I don't even know how to do this. Probably using ethernet cables, but how do I get my computer to see my xbox? and what do I do from my computer once it "see's" my xbox?

Sorry to be the biggest noob to ever post on this site. But I do catch on to things quickly but I just can't seem to get a start becuase I can't understand the lingo and where to begin. The tutorials and faq's assume that the user has some inkling of knowledge and the lingo, and I don't. So I was just hoping there would be a "noobs step by step guide from scratch" somewhere on here.

Thanks for any help in advance

you need to get the X3 3294 V16+ bios from XBINs and burn the bin file to a DVD-R (CD-Rs dont work with most boxes). after you do you need to flash via disc form the Xecuter flash bios screen.

then i'd suggest you FTP into the box and backup your original EEPROM and drive contents to your PC. to FTP into the box boot with the chip ineabled while holding the white button, it'll then boot into X3 Live, your box's IP address will be displayed at the bottom left of the screen if not go into network settings and enable FTP and setup your network settings.

if using a router connect a Cat5 cable between the box and the router, if you don't use a router use a cross Cat5 cable between the box and PC, open your FTP client and use the IP as the URL and the default user name and pass are x3 for both.

then put the new harddrive in the box and boot back into X3 Live and it has an option for setting up a new harddrive, it'll do everthing for you about formatting/partitioning it, then just FTP into the box again and restore all the files you backed up and you're ready to go. thats about as cut and dry as i can make it out but hopefuly it'll get you started in the right direction. after that you'll need to decide what dash you wanna run (i use XBMC myself) and you can either install games to the harddrive via FTP (i use FlashFXP for this and all FTPing to my box) or by programs (i use DVD2XBOX here)

Wow, as much as I apprecaite this comment and suggestion of what to do, the problem is that I don't know what a lot of these things are. I just don't know the lingo or terminology to just do all of this.

That's why I was wondering if there was a step by step guide on this website, that tells nOObs what to do after they've got the mod chip installed. The Mod chip installation was very easy to follow and it was written in lamens terms.

But everything you wrote me may as well have been written in Japanese. I know I need to read up more and figure out what these things are. But I just don't know where to start.

I just wish there was a guide that assumed the user had zero knowledge of what they were doing. That way I could use what I know to simply move along faster, but the info would be there when I get stuck.

For example, I don't know how to do this ... "after you do you need to flash via disc form the Xecuter flash bios screen."

I will try and do the things you noted w/o destroyin my XBOX. But if you have any more comments, maybe in a more explanitory tone, I'd really appreciate that too.

Thanks and I'll talk to you soon,

XBINs is #xbinx on mIRC where you have to log into and gain access to the XBINs FTP server where the BIOS files are located that will play backup games (the X3 3294 V16+ in your case) there is no easy explanation for that but if you search the stickies here there are guides on how to log into XBINs

there is no one page does all here because there is to much information to compile into a single one and there are thousands wrote already for each individual step, i know they can be difficult for new folks to dectypt though.

so the first step you need to complete is to get the BIOS file, if you can't figure out XBINs contact me via yahooooo IM (i use the same screen name there) and I'll help you get it sorted out.

second step is to flash the X3 3294 V16+ BIOS to one of the chips 1meg flash banks. to do that the easiest way for the nOOb is via HTTP so you wanna turn the box on and have FlashBIOS on screen with the network cable connected to the box and your router/PC. choose option 'flash via HTTP' and it'll then configure and give you an IP address. go to your PC and open your browser and enter the IP address from the TV screen and hit enter, you'll bring up the flashing screen that asks you to browse for the file, select the above mentioned BIOS file (the v16+) then it'll flash, the PC will instruct you to watch the TV, the TV will show the flashing progress and then the box will turn off.........at this point your box will now play backups. you can then relax and read more on FTPing and such :)

Check out the "Tuts" Forum, there is a sticky in there, and the title is a bit of a give away.

What are the folders that you put apps and games in? Do you have to create the folders?

Does each game or app get thrown into the folder or do they each get there own subfolder?

I am running:
V1.1
X3CE with Xapt3r
XBMC via AID 3.0
120 GB hard drive with everything in F drive.

with everything in F on your setup all games go in the "Games" folder on the F drive, applications go in the "Apps" folder, and yes each in their own subfolder.

I figured out how to do it with DVD2xbox, directly from the Xbox, but how do you get the files to FTP them from your computer.

I tood the files off the DVD, but they were video and audio files . . . like a DVD. That didn't work and I know that you can't use an iso file.

When I put the game in my computer DVD drive, what do I have to do to get them on the Xbox?

I have heard that dvd2xbox has trouble with EA games.

I think you missed the point. None of these terms make sense. What is an mIRC and where do you get it?
What is a Tut forum?

Read these posts, to try and get a handle on the mass amounts of info being thrown at you:
http://www.team-xecuter.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=23

Tuts = Tutorials

mIRC = Internet Relay Chat Client
http://www.mirc.com/

You have an xbox (your version is 1.6) with a mod chip (X3).
Now that you have the chip installed you need to flash it with a different bios (X3_3294 v1.6) . . . found on xbins with mIRC and an FTP client (google FlashFTP)
Once that is flashed, you can play back versions of your games.

If you want to do more you can add what is called a dashboard that wil give your xbox a million different options and features. New hard drives, music, videos . . .

I am new but once you read all of the "tut forum" you will have a better understanding . . . I hope. People smarter than me, let me know if I am leading him the wrong way!

you'll find most boxes won't read a CD so you'll need to burn it to DVD, just burn a 100 meg (or even a gig) dummy file along with the bios.bin as a data disc.

Yes, as mentioned about DVD better, CD-RW would also read better than CD-R. I much prefer HTTP flashing though. Does not waste any disc and its quick and easier especially with an established network.

This was the only flashing tutorial you need after installing the modchip.
http://www.team-xecuter.com/flashbios/

If you read the small points, it mentions everything from the where to get the bios, xbins tutorial, hard drives, bad installations and 1.6b. I bet everyone skips this since its repeated on the forums so many times these days.
