Still RROD After Multiple Fixes - What Am I Doing Wrong?

Hey Guys -

I've got an XBox 360 Zephyr with a Samsung m28 that I've had for years since buying it new. For the past two years, I've fought RROD a few times, but always managed to get it working either by taking it to a local guy who repairs them or applying fixes myself. After getting RROD yesterday, I applied the usual fixes - plus some additional ones, but am not having luck getting it back up.

The Issue
- It started after a 2-3 hour gaming session which froze. Upon restarting console, it froze at XBox logo. After that, RROD.

Previous Fixes / Mods
- Local guy applies fix which attaches GPU / CPU heatsinks via bolts with x2 washers on each side of the motherboard
- Used LT flashed drive for years - recently installed ****

Current State
- Powering on partially assembled XBox shows RROD & no video

What I've Tried to Fix This Time
Everything tried below resulted in RROD
- Reapply Thermal Paste
- Disassembled, then removed GPU / CPU heatsinks
- Cleaned, then reapplied thermal paste (paper thin)
- Reattached heatsinks (x8 bolts total) to where they were a bit beyond hand tight
- Found new (to me) fix to create heatsinks for x4 chips on bottom of motherboard. Created DIY thermal pads with x2 pennies wrapped in electrical tape and attached to each of the 4 chips
- Removed and reattached heatsinks with varying amount of bolt pressure

Error Codes
-Screen is blank.
- During RROD, I hold sync and hit eject. As of writing (the only time I've thought to get an error code), I am getting "0102" (Cold solderjoint - CPU/GPU/RAM)

Nothing seems to work. Only thermal I have left is what's on the chips. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Nowhere
Reball the GPU.
if its been through alot of repairs already prolly smarter to just put a new gpu on it.

edit: better yet the smarter thing to do is let go of that one,its a zephyr, almost xenon with a hdmi port, thier horrible.

nothing you or your friend has done has fixed anything!!

only thing that will fix it is a reballed GPU as MartinC has said.

youve basically papered over cracks and then wonder why the wall still falls down!!

I hate that people put bolts in and charge people stating that they have fixed the console. If anything I have found its worse since it warps the board.

Yeah reball will be needed mate like they have said. But on that board youre probably better upgrading.

Ok, ok ,ok. Think I get the message

Believe it or not, the other guy told me he re-balled it, but that was almost a year ago. Worked great for a while, but obviously stopped. The main issue for me currently is that I don't have any of the tools (or experience) for how to do that. I'm going to get a replacement, but in the meantime am trying to find something I can do to get it up temporarialy.

If it makes any difference, I did buy a used box (Falcon) from GameStop a couple of months ago which is 100% OEM. The bad thing about it is that it has a Lite-On drive. My current, broken box has a Sammy m28 which is obviously much easier to work with. I found out yesterday that I could make a DIY probe to get it's key but my question is: Should I just use the new hardware 100%, put the Sammy in the OEM box, or perhaps use parts from OEM box to fix old Zephyr one?

Couple more things...
When getting a replacement (which will work with flashing and/or ****,) what should I look for? Would buying a new one out right from Best Buy be suitable? Would I have better luck getting a used one from GameStop? Not up to speed on if hardware in newer models have more protection.

Any way you look at it, I'm not able to get my tools (X360USB, etc.) for probably a couple of days so am still very interested in finding a way to get old box up - even for just a while if possible. Heard that disconnecting fan, powering on, letting it run for 15, then letting it cool completely may get it back in shape for a while. Know it's not ideal, but then again, look at what I'm trying to do.

Thanks Guys!

You can mail the PCB to someone and have them get the key for you, or you could just buy a ck3 probe3 they're pretty cheap these days.

i would probably use the new oem box you just purchased, this one seems to have reached the end of its life. It's still able to be saved, just depends on how much money you want to throw at it. The slims are more reliable, but more expensive to mod.

If you won't be using XBL then you can put the Sammy in the oem box, but to do that you will need the drive key, and it's still not recommended anyways.

DO NOT OVERHEAT THE CONSOLE IN HOPES OF A CHEAP REFLOW!!! Have someone with the proper tools reflow it for you, or just don't do it. The added heat could damage other parts of the console

Reball the GPU.
Even reball doesn't help Zephyr very often. It's either still rrod 0102 or this error comes back in a couple of weeks. I believe that most of RRoDs due to irreversible damage of the GPU. Heating it up sometimes fixes the problem temporarily.

Fair enough. So reball and if that doesn't help, replace it.

0102 is GPU regardless.

I've had my Jasper 360 since '09, flashed it about a year ago, main thing is to making sure it doesn't overheat which causes the e74 and eventually bad stuff like this will happen
