i have a strange issue here.

i tryin to put my slim back to retail.but am unable to write the retail nand back.

i get looking for usb interface device can not continue.
and it's not the nand x as i tested it on a phat that i got and it reads and writes fine on that.
plus i am 99% sure it not my soldering.

i am using qsb.i also tried direct wires to but it the same result.:(

What have you already got on the NAND?

I'm assuming you've tried the obvious Chris, like a restart, different USB port, reset nand-x, connected nand-x, USB and psu in different orders. I usually have a problem with my pc needing a restart after reading the nand before programming the Coolrunner.

This is the usual cannot detect flash controller message that some consoles experience after few times of reading & writing the NAND. No one seems to have found out yet why this happens, I've had consoles read the nand perfectly 3 times and when tried to read it the 4th time it gave me the same problem as you so just kept it stock and for live testing.

If you want to change the console to retail permanently you can always flash your retail nand either via xell or flash360 tool but there will be no going back.

Another option that would invlove more cost is to try a different SPI programmer as some people in the past reported that when they tried some they worked. You can also try progkeet with it's direct to nand clip but you'll have to spend £££ ...

You can also try shortening the NAND . . .

On a serious note, do you wanna try my nand-x? I'm off to Plymouth for a bit on sunday so wont be needing it for a while. I'll post you mine to try if you like?

No worries buddy, must just be your terrible soldering then lol :D

I would venture to say it is something to do with the SPI points being fussed about with, and would also venture to say that the demon (wired differently) would possibly be able to correct the problem once it is released. All hope is not lost.

Have you checked the readings for the NAND-x as per my troubleshooting guide?

If you're booting into RGH right now, rename the stock nand to nandflash.bin and flash via xell. Switch to PRG to make sure it boots and you're done.

Would that leave him stuck at retail until he can get his nand-x to be recognised on this board or until DemoN could maybe fix it?

Or another solution, yes. Did an RGH last week where the SPI was duff on the southbridge, so dumped the NAND with my progskeet and 360-clip, then built and wrote the ECC to the VNAND and flashed back the first 128 blocks (of 1024). After getting the CPU key, I just updated using rawflash so the whole process was carried out without needing the NAND-x points.

Thanks, it's good to start understanding the alternatives and intricacies of these things. Let's you know there is nearly always an alternative.
