Strange Xbox 360 Slim (Trinity) Dashboard Freeze

Hello,

I have an untouched Xbox 360 slim 4gb with a trinity motherboard and I've noticed something quite strange and I don't know how to fix it.

The console seems to boot normally but once it gets to the part that the dashboard shows up (it goes straight to the dashboard, no login stuff) it freezes. What's weird is that the console seems to work perfectly before it crashes: controllers sync, game discs spin and when the dash starts to show you can see the "Play game" tile.

My first thought was that either the internal memory unit had gone bad, or there was a failed update which caused the problem.

My first course of action was to remove the IMU. No dice.

Second course of action was to try to uninstall failed updates with the sync button + power button combo. Again, nothing.

At this point I'm thinking that maybe the onboard nand chip (16mb) has gone bad. So I try to update the dashboard by USB thinking I could "refresh" it. But when the console boots up with the USB inserted it shows the "update required" dialog with text sometimes missing either partially or completely. When the console manages to load the whole text and I click on "Yes", the screen changes and it hangs again. What's baffling is that even if the text are missing, the "update required" dialog is functional (i.e. you can move the selection to yes or no), if the text are missing, selecting an option causes the console to hang.

So right now I'm out of ideas. I'm thinking that either the nand chip is dead or I have some cold solder joints somewhere which are causing this chaos.

I should note that the console NEVER red dots! Even when it hangs, you can open/close the tray and it turns off with a single click of the power button (which is strange since it's supposed to be frozen).

Any ideas would be appreciated guys!

Is this a stock xbox, or an RGH? If it is an RGH then update with j-runner. if it is stock, RGH it and get the cpu key, then build a new stock nand image and write that to the console. This should fix any corrupt nand issues you are having, unless you are in fact correct, and the nand chip is fried.

Hey,

It's a stock console and I don't have the required hardware to mod it at the moment. I'm considering buying the RGH equipment but to be honest I don't want to invest too much into it if it's going to be needing a reflow/reball since I got it for cheap and the repair would cost more than the console.

I've played with it a bit more and I think that when the motherboard is flexed near the heatsink when trying to update by USB, the console seems to act differently. It loads the update dialog in 3 different ways.

First:
Dialog name: "Update Re"
Dialog Text: "To pro"
Dialog Options: "No" is missing but the selection works (up/down) until a button is pushed.
Second:
Dialog Name: "Update Re"
Dialog Text: Full text
Dialog Options: Both options there, selection seems to work (up/down) but the console freezes when a button is pushed.
Third:
Full update dialog is shown. When pressing on "Yes" to begin the update, the screen freezes halfway into the next update screen.
This is quite baffling. The flexing might be pointing towards a cold solder joint, but it's limited to these three cases. I've tried pressing onto the heatsink, HANA and southbridge with no effect. The fact that it doesn't red dot and it boots/works fully except for anything dashboard related seems to be pointing to a bad/corrupt nand. Or maybe RAM?

What's funny is that it was set to boot directly to the dashboard. Therefore, I can't get it to boot directly into a game so I don't know if a game would work without freezing. If I could get a game to load automatically on boot and not freeze it would verify that the problem lies with the nand.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Hey, sorry for taking such a long time. I've tried putting pressure on all chips (ram, southbridge, hana, cgpu and nand) but there's no difference. It's pretty sad since I bought this thinking it would probably be a failed internal memory unit and it's so weird.

I've noticed something strange on the board. There's a small place where it seems like the board's bubbled(?) up. It looks as if it has hot glue on that spot. It's all blurry-like and some of the traces look to be affected. Could this be causing it?

I don't have a picture from the board since I've put it back together and packaged it but the affected area is here:

Thanks for the reply. I'll post them as soon as I can.

It's a pretty weird thing, at first I thought nothing of it but now it seems that it could be the main cause of the problem.

The original seller stated that the freezing problem had occurred before but it magically fixed itself and worked fine but now it was happening again, so it seems pretty intermittent.

Maybe there's a short or a broken trace that's causing the problem, and since the traces lead to the southbridge, this might be affecting system-wide IO (maybe the USB bus?) causing a failure to read data from the USB containing the update files. In conclusion, this could explain the missing characters on the update prompt! So, if my assumptions are correct (it's a long shot, I know), fixing the traces might make it work again! I'm excited! :D

Could someone replicate this by trying to start a console with an update USB stick inserted in the back and shorting the pins of another USB port while it's reading the USB during boot-up? It should come up with a broken update dialog. Do this at your own risk though.

Shorting the USB pins will make the console not power up. You have a very interesting problem here that's for sure

Huh... Just opened it up and took some photos. I was wrong though... The bubbling is in another place: http://i.imgur.com/Y8gzAjq.jpg

I think the motherboard is a goner. It looks like an internal short. I dunno if reconnecting the small traces would fix it. =(

It does kinda look like glue with something stuck on the top of it.
I'm inclined to say that it isn't the cause if the problem but that is unusual for a retail console.

None of the NAND pins or rgh points seem to be touched I take it?

To be honest, I haven't checked, but the console was a virgin retail console so I don't think so. Plus, the warranty sticker was untouched. The seller did tell me that he tried to open it himself but couldn't open the plastic shell so he stopped.

Using the camera's flash you can see some of the traces that are inside the board. I think that the yellowish/papery looking area is the inside of the board, meaning that the top green layer has chipped off.

Here's a close-up of the damaged area, with camera flash: http://i.imgur.com/JIAhdYq.jpg

It looks a bit like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Failur...er/File:Failed_SMPS_controller_IC_ISL6251.jpg

I have similar problem (xbox frozen in dashboard when poup YES or NO show up but there in no other text in this poup):

I reball XCGPU and HANA.
No Bad Block in NAND.
This could be RAM bricks problem?

Sorry for bad English - im from Poland ;)
