If we get some good information, maybe this should be a sticky?

Can someone post how to use a multimeter to diagnose bad soldering? Since 99% of all FRAG issues originate from improper soldering, I believe that by checking the soldering points with a multimeter first would be beneficial versus desoldering-soldering, etc. It's a more passive and safer approach to problem solving soldering problems.

Can someone offer a procedure on checking soldering points with a mutlimeter?

Thanks in advance.

You are kidding right?

You want to be taught electronics on an Xbox forum?

There's a wonderful tool called Google - you can search on topics and keywords. If you want to learn how to use a multimeter then I suggest you start reading.

Tips would be specific to the Xbox motherboard.
If you dont know how to use a multimeter, you probably shouldnt be opening an Xbox.

So what exactly do you need (If you know how to use one)?

martin, i think this guy is asking for someone to post some info on how to use a multimedia so that if a totally clueless person need to know they could come here and find a stick. but as he said "if you don't know how to use a multimeter you shouldn't be opening your xbox."

I agree that teaching someone how to use a multimeter is probably not for the xbox forums, but I do think it might be a good idea to post what testing people have done, and how/what they've seen when they've fixed different problems.

ie: If the sound is out and pin #3 registers 1.2v, resolder pin #3 or something similar. It would short cut the diagnosis of a broken install.

right behind you
ummmm......just in case this kid actually wants his question answered......

-take the two leads (theyre red and black, made of metal, and are good for stabbing)
-place the leads on the ends of whatever trace or path you want to test
-check the readout
^read the numbers

if this is just a little too hard, i'm sure they sell a dumbass edition thats voice activated

XCronus...

Don't he have to turn the multimeter on first? (Maybe that info is in the voice activated dumbass version!) and press the button or point the pointery thingy at the little horseshoe thingy as well?

zha4fh...
I guess you are refering to testing the LPC?
Set the meter to ohms, (horseshoe thingy) lowest setting, 200 ohms or so, then test from the X3 side of the pin header (or wire install socket) to a point beyond the solder joint to be tested... follow the trace to the next available solder blob and test to there. you should see a very low reading, 0.5 to 1 ohms for a good joint, any higher and there is something wrong.

Honestly, anyone that doesn't already know how to use a multimeter enough to expand it's application to a motherboard or any other more sophisticated piece of electronics shouldn't be doing anything to their xbox that might break it.

I.E. Soldering pin headers.....

OMG YES

My manager has a fluke... wooooweeee...

Also in the electronics labs at school we have Fluke45's... those things are amazing! Especially with the GPIB. Nothing like using LabVIEW to automatically take all of your measurements for you.

Really guys, calm down about the flukes, it sounds a bit sad and we all don't want to hear what type of tissues you use to clean the mess out of your keyboards when you start thinking "autoranging' and "thermal probes" and "capacitance testing" I dread to think how ecstatic you get with 4 1/2 digits and backlit displays.

Get out a bit more.....

i think you need to lay off badassbiker900, bc some of us use flux for our jobs like me and I wouldn't trade it for another type of meter, fluke makes the best stuff and we are just saying it so lay off. As for wanttin to know how to use a multimeter please read the instruction that come with them or search on google, this board if for helping with x3 problems not the many uses and tutorial for a multimeter

abgx360 problem - Necessary to stealth patch with abgx360?

Hi! Was wondering if anyone could help me...

I've got a few games that I'm currently backing up by hot-swapping using the following;

DVD - Atonement (7.82GB)
Game - GTA IV
wxRipper
abgx360

I can create an .iso file with wxRipper no problem, although admittedly it took some time editing the layout file, but the .iso comes out fine...

I keep getting error messages using abgx360. It says it has detected AnyDVD-like software which is corrupting my data. I can't think what these could be? I uninstalled my copy of AnyDVD AND CloneDVD (incase it was at all linked | unlikely, but anyway) just to be totally sure it could not be interfering at all.

If I'm not going to be playing my backup copy of GTAIV online, is there even any need for me to be using abgx360? Is it purely for under-the-radar playing on Xbox Live? In my case should I just go straight to writing the .iso to a DVD + R DL, with software like Xbox Backup Creator etc?

Thanks for your time :)
