Is it safe to put a DVD drive that works from a 1.6 into my 1.0 with a messed up drive, and then go on xbox Live?

This could be a problem. I have a newly chipped xbox which I bought refurbished from GameStop (was that a bad move, to purchase a refurbished xbox?) With a DVD drive that operates slowly upon booting, and craps out after about 10 minutes of use :|

I don't suggest it, someone said they got banned for doing that, don't ask my how, I think it has something to do with the drives firmware code and the eeprom and such.
From what I have read it uses the firmware from the HDD not the DVDRom. As most who do mods just swap out the HDD.

True, but the question is, once the Xbox has been connected to Xbox Live, will there be a problem with M$ recognizing different hardware? (by serial number, or other means)

For some reason, I can't edit my posts, so even though I'm double posting, please have patience.

I read somewhere on the xbox-scene forums that any (xbox) DVD drive will work plus the Samsung 616t.

I shall post a follow up to tell you the results.

Well as I wanted at one point to use xbox live I did a lot of searching on the web regarding it.

What I found was that
When you make your xbox live account 2 things happen.
1> The EEprom code (checksum I believe) is attached to your username
2> The HDD serial is attached to your username.

This was found out by people who had xbox live and went to other peoples houses and logged on with thier xboxes. Both accounts would get banned.

Some others did testing and found it was 2 things that caused the problems (Or so they said.)

Thanks for the link, but that only talks about HDD and EEPROM, or is that the point; that the DVD drive can't get you banned?
