system update on usb stick

jtag has been updated to 13146 and my avatars ar grayed out, so i downloaded the 13146 update to a usb stick from the ms site and booted the box with it in and nothing?
ive done this before to fix avatars on the 12625 dash and it worked
Ive tried having the folder update with the $update inside or just the $update folder on the stick, the only thing i didnt try was the contents of the folder into the root of the stick. also tried as fat and fat32 no joy
any ideas?

try a different USB stick, some aren't compatible.

you may have a point!
I did pick up a very old 256mb stick as it was the only one lying around
ill give it a go and report back (always usefull to give results for other peoples future searches)

1. The folder has to be named $SystemUpdate and should be present in the root of the USB Drive.

2. If you've DashLaunch installed, then you'll have to rename the folder to $$ystemUpdate in order for the Xbox360 to find the update.

Great advice, renaming the folder sorted it all out
