My wife went crazy and bought an X-Box and some game as a gift to me for X-Mas so I've been playing some Tennis, Football, Roundball, etc for the last week. I had no idea if an X-Box could be modded in any way, so I decided to hit the 'Net and get the scoop.

Holy Spicoli, and CAN they be modded, indeed! I read some articles about different mod chips, different cases, Live! issues, etc. and obviously had some questions, as anyone who has lived in PC land since the early 80's would.

How big of a HDD will my X-Box take? How do I find my serial number? Can I play on Live! if I mod? What are the best mod-chips? Will I be soldering or not? Can I turn off the chip if I want to use the old BIOS? Etc, et al.

Every question I had was answered at least once, if not may times in these forums. Amen for the [ Search ] button and amen to those of you who spent the time answering all my questions before I even asked them.

Thanks! from a soon-to-be-owner of a modded X-Box.

do you remember the first few weeks the x3 came out a storm of NOOBs just bombarded the site with titles like:

Help i broke my X3

Theres no X3 BIOS menu i think i broke it

I CANT SOLDER WHERES THE SOLDERLESS ADAPTER

then of course you got the odd one saying

Why do people keep slagging off the new comers?

Dude, your wife rocks with a present like that! :) My fiance has been pretty easy going about it herself, as I've had the Box laid out across the dining room table at least 4 times since I got my chip. She's understanding like that... guess I'll keep her! :)

nobody answered the question

i'll take a crack at a few...

i believe i've read of a 300gb hdd inside an xbox.
if you cannot solder, i'd get a Xecuter 2(solderless),
Xecuter 3 is much better chip, the solder job is pretty easy in my opinion.
the serial # of your xbox is on the bottom of the xbox.
http://www.xbox-scene.com has alot of good tutorials for you.
you cannot go onto LIVE with a modded xbox, but you CAN turn the chip off to play on live, as long as you don't go onto live before modding and adding a HDD. do all that first then get on live the first time.

hope this helps you.
and that is a very nice first post!!

I think he said he'd found the answers by searching.. hence the grats.. but the biggest IDE drive avail at the moment is the Hitachi 400Gb, and why get a X2 solderless when u get get an X3 solderless if you can't solder....

Re: how to fix my drive from not opening

Have you tried to see if the gears just under the tray needs cleaning? Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D64M3FAq-Ww&feature=related

Re: how to fix my drive from not opening

Could be something wrong with the mechanism

As tripleduo said, clean the drive

If that don't work, replace the drive

I'm sorry, but that video made me .
Personally, I would not do that or recommend that anyone else do it.

Main problem would be with the belt. Take it out, clean it, and put it back in (or replace it if you have another one). There is some discussion about this on the CVX Game Console Repair Forum here.

Yes its quite humorous, but the point was to clean the belt and around the gears. And thats what he did in the video. I dont think anyone will man handle their drive in that fashion. I think we are a more advanced community to know better than that???

There is ALWAYS someone EVERYWHERE trying to one-up another person. This isnt a popularity contest Twinbird
