The Big Freeze

Hi all,

Thanks to Textbook's firmware tutorial was successfully able to flash my Samsung M25 drive with iXtreme1.2.

Loaded up a backed up copy of BioShock... tested it for a couple of minutes, and satisfied all was working, turned it off.

I later returned and loaded up the demo of TimeShift. 1min into the demo, my 360 froze for the first time ever (had it 16 months).

Turned it off - and it froze again before reaching the dashboard. Left it awhile and tried again - managed to get into the demo but froze on the menu screen.

Am I screwed?!??!? Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

The same thing started happening to me last night. Mine was flashed months ago and have never had a problem. Then last night for some reason something went wrong and it freezes every time I play it and only after about 5 mins of playing. Guess its time to flash back to original firmware.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a little confused as to how the firmware could cause the freezing. I mean I could understand if playing a game from a disc and it happens there could be a connection, but if it first freezed up playing a demo, with no disc in the drive, how can the ODD firmware be the cause?

And how could the firmware start causing a freeze months after being updated?

Will flash back to the original - if it fixes the problem that will be great... but would still need to know why the iXtreme firmware was causing such a problem - in the hope of being able to flash it again and have it work properly.

So many 360s seem to have freezed up - they're tempremental at best - my gut feeling is that Ramsbee987's machine has just started to freeze after a lot of use like so many others... and for mine that tinkering around in it has set it off.

The thing about my console is that I don't really play it that much, maybe a couple hours a week at the very most. I did get one of the first batches when they came out so that could have something to do with it.

I've been trying to troubleshoot what could be causing it today; trying it not connected to Live, playing with different controllers... until it finally just gave up all together on me. Won't even start anymore and I've got the three red flashing lights meaning something is wrong, obviously. So anyone know anything I could do to fix this thing.

if its freezing play downloaded games from xbox live its not your firmware.that sounds like a hardware problem.cpu, gpu something.

yeah that is the sign of a 360 on its last legs mate i know ive had this happen 3 fooking times now, first 360 lasted 2 hours out of the box froze then died, (three red lights) back to pc world the following day got replacement, lasted six months same sh*t, and the last one must have been about a year, then started freezing and poped its cloggs till i brought it back from the dead with the xclamp fix.

Yep well it certainly died... 3 red rings. Not the end of the world though - actually like the idea of getting the overheating issue repaired knowing the fix should ensure it never freezes or overheats again. New layer of thermal compound on the GPU & CPU, clamp everything down nice and tight, add some thermal fans to cool everything down even further. A week from now should be up and running permanently.

I think beginners wanting to mod the 360 should be aware that the biggest risk is most likely that the 360 will at some point start overheating like thousands upon thousands of other 360s have (be they modded or not), and that in that event with the warranty voided there will be a cost involved to get that issue fixed, unless you're very good with opening and playing around with technology.

yeah you should be fine doing that, thats what i did and installed some more fans in side the box, aswell as doing the fan shroud mod which pulls more air directly ove the heatsinks, google rjbtech and you'll find what i mean. :)

Since I am somewhat of a noob when it comes to doing all the things you guys have been talking about for a fix for the rings, is there some sort of write up on how I might be able to do this. I don't want to pay a bunch on money to have my box fixed and don't feel like buying a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
