While doing my current event for history class i found this article on cnn

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. said Tuesday that its researchers have proven that a technology they invented could eventually replace the transistor, a fundamental building block of computers.

In a paper published in Tuesday's Journal of Applied Physics, HP said three members of its Quantum Science Research group propose and demonstrate a "crossbar latch," which provides the signal restoration and inversion required for general computing without the need for transistors.

yea i kno, it's not x3 news but i thought it was a pretty interesting topic.

In the article it said that if this new technology is used, the comptuers using it will be thousands of times more powerful than they are today...Pretty scary thought. Think of how awsome games would be if consoles used that technology.

now the transistor can join the vacuum tube in the vault for unused electronics...

but why did it have to be HP that found something so kool? their printer engineers cant make a freaking printer that doesnt go berserk

yea but think of the cost of these new super computers...i say it will be atleast 8 years before this technology is used publicly. Also, even though it says it would be inexpensive to make, they will still put a huge f**ing price tag on it just because it's so much better than what we have currently...

HP makes perfect consumer products - Charge a barely reasonable amount for a device that you have to replace every 8 months, and then charge an outrageous price for the consumable parts which their products reports as consumed at about 50% of use. It's too obvious to ignore, they found a great tube straight into your wallet.

Irony.. I currently work for HP in Idianapolis IN. You like some of thier larger systems wait till you see the xw9300... damn thing has Dual Opteron CPUs onboard everything and a stock 750w supply.

** I strongly most of the time deny any affiliation with HP as its actually quite troubling.

i hope their patent runs out fast or that someone else makes a better replacement for a transistor.

i also hear that they make IC's w/o packaging now? that dramatically reduces their size for chips.
