Thus far, the big news is that it will not be backwards compatible. That's enough for me: I'm buying the Playstation 3. 'Course, that also has something to do with my powerful pet hate instilled in me by Microsoft Windows... the worst OS on the planet. It's slowly infused my opinions of all their products. (I bought my XBox before I became educated on just how evil that company is.) Also, the next console is highly integrated with XBox Live. That is simply lame: why should I have to pay money per month simply for the priviledge of being able to get the full capabilities of my console? Absolutely rediculous... if it's any consolation, I don't play games like Evercrack, World of Warcraft, City of Heros, etc. Because the idea of paying monthly for the ability to actually play a game is stupid. But hey, to each their own. I know I don't have the same opinions of everybody on this site.

EDIT: The above items are subject to change: after all, nothing is set in stone yet. I'm basing my information on what seems like solid rumors, but I guess Veggie Tales has taught all of us about that! (Rumorweed, anyone? :)) So, I won't make final judgements, but this is what I currently feel.

Dude I totally agree with you linux, it's rediculous to pay a monthly fee just to play online. We've paid enough for the console already and the games that we buy, there's enough more money for them to run servers and host games for free. And whoever came up with the name Xbox 360 deserves to be punched in the ear, it just sounds so stupid and silly. What is wrong with Xbox 2??? And no backward-compatibility? That is just nonsense. I've also heard that it won't support the new media formats, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, and just sticks to the current DVD format. I have to say it's the games that will make or break a system, but people like to know the specs and how powerful a system is before investing. My prediction is once again, the PS3 will come out on top.

Will there be a "System Link" equivalent on the new one ? I don't play XBL, but I sure love playing online with my friends using XB Connect. I would be really disappointed if they don't have a similar option on the new console.

They said it's going to support dual-layer dvd's... which isn't bad, becasue they're no games that fill up 1 single layer dvd let alone a dual layer... that's 9gb's... the next gen consoles will not have 9 gb games on them... there's no way. And the whole thing with blu-ray and hd-dvd... is just for movies not games.

The only reason I would buy one when it's released is so that I can fit Xecuter chips for profit. XBOX2 is gonna be bigger than XBOX, so that's a lot of profit.
I hope Team X make chips for it 'cos of the great web site forums support and the top quality products.

Amen soul brotha! :) Especially for a filthy stinking rich company like Microshaft.

Well, I can see where you're coming from, don't get me wrong! But I must disagree.
I'm sure most people told the Wright Brothers that powered flight was useless for anything practical. There are sometimes when progress should be made, simply for progress. And I feel that way about digital media: we should be striving for better and better technology. Blue-Ray rocks! There is so much potential. I'm afraid that HD-DVD will come out the winner, simply because it'll get on the market faster, and that sucks.

Besides, how do we know that next generation consoles will only need 9 gigs of information? If I recall, there was a certain person who said, "640K ought to be enough for anybody." Know who that was? Bill Gates. The next generation of games, if predictions come true, will be absolutely stunning, graphics wise. And graphics and video are what drive faster and more efficient computer hardware. If all we were doing was word processing, we could all be typing on Commodore 64's.

I really hope that Sony comes out on top. I'm sick and tired of Microsoft winning all the time, simply because of their monopoly. Know what would happen if Microsoft and Apple (or Sun Microsystems, or whoever) had a 50-50 market share in the OS business? Lots and lots of good changes would occur! You would see standardized file formats, innovation increase ten-fold by both sides, ease of use, more stable programs, and a dramatic drop in prices all the way around. It would be an absolute boon for anybody in technology, instead of a giant neon sign saying, "Microsoft!" all the time. Man... do I hate that company. I don't hate anybody in particular, I don't hate Bill Gates, but I hate the company... okay, that was kinda off on a tangent, so I'll shut up now. ;)

But the thing with the high-def formats, is that games won't take up that much space... HD-DVD is like 23GB, and Blu-Ray is like 40GB... what's the largest PC game? KOTOR? that's 5GB? As far as the PS3 goes, i doubt they will be putting games on the blu-ray discs... Blu-Ray costs wat too much right now, and they won't make a game that's 40GB large. It will be used to play movies as a replacement to the DVD player.

IMO if they have the space... they'll fill it.

Especially when the VR suits come out and the remote control Mech Warriors...

and the Transformers....

Don't get me wrong... i hope they do fill up the space with uber graphics and the such... but... they still don't fill up space on discs now!! how many new games now are under 3gb? tonnes... there are not many that reach 3.5gb. That still leaves over 1 gig. Are you saying that by next year... all of a sudden developers are gonna be making 20gb games? highly unlikely.

I don't doubt that games will suddenly jump in size. Take this for an example, remember PS1 games used CD (700MB or so) format? And when PS2 came out, suddenly the games are in GB's. Metal Gear Solid Substance, that game is like 6GB+, that's 9X-10X more than a game in size. That is a huge gap between one generation and another. So I won't be surprised to find that next-gen consoles will have improved graphics/audio that HD-DVD/Blu-Ray is a necessity. My opinion.

Well, I'm not a huge Microsoft fan by any means. However, I think they DO deserve credit for the Xbox. I think they did a really good job on the game console. They also came up with a lot of the concepts on their OWN, which is unusual for them. They usually grab the idea from somebody else, slap their logo on it and market it.

right behind you
developers will not NEED the extra storage that hd-dvd and blu ray present, but they will use it eventually

im not saying games will suddenly jump in size from ~4 gbs to a full ~30-40 gbs, but i predict that with the rise in demand for advanced graphics and sound games on w/e the next gen xbox will be called will use most of that extra space

Rant time! :-D

Remember- "640k ought to be enough for anybody?" I really believe that if the space is available, then technology and software will develope that require it, giving us better graphics and longer games. That's why I'm shocked that Microsoft is not going to use the HD-DVD or Blue-Ray formats. If Sony has the extra 16 to 41 gigs per disk to their advantage, they will use it! Maybe not right off the bat: I would suspect that the release games for all next generation consoles will look only slightly better then their previous console systems. However, as more and more games are developed for each system, they will more efficiently utilize the hardware and media formats.

I have evidence to back my opinion up:
Compare Halo to Halo II. Now, of course, Halo (as a release title) was absolutely nothing to scoff at. However, compare that to Halo 2. It looks like high school compared to elementry school: all grown up. Okay, bad analogy, but you catch my drift.

My point is that the programers slowly learned how to take full advantage of each console. This is why I think that the PS3, using a newer and more efficient media format, will eventually be revealed as the superior console (assuming the specs remain as they are).

Both machines use absolutely awesome processors. Well, actually, Microsoft isn't using an awesome processor... they're just using 2-3 Pentium 3.0 gigahertz processors. Kinda the lazy way out if you ask me... how are they going to keep it under $250? Okay, regardless, both machines will have very powerful specs. The Playstation 3 will be using an unbelievably efficient 4.5 gigahertz cell processor, which works kind of like a computer cluster. Microsoft is using the 2-3 processors. Both are capable of teraflop performace. Both (I believe) have 256mb of RAM (which doesn't sound like a lot, but keep in mind the XBox only has 64mb). I don't know that much about the next Nintendo system, haven't done my research, so I can't comment on that. Microsoft will be using a standard DVD reader, while Sony will be using Blue Ray. I feel that, in the long run, Sony's console will be shown to be more powerful. The future is yet to be seen, but I'll be putting my money into Sony when the PS3 is released.
(Yeah, yeah. I know: it's not the specs that matter: it's the games. I know that, and I feel that both have equally good games, so don't bother to tell me that. I can forgo Halo 3; I won't miss it.)

Well, I guess I'm kind of glad Microsoft is going to go ahead and use old technology: it gives a lot of the tech nerds a reason to NOT go with the software giant that hurts the market place. I'm glad the next console will completely integrate with XBox Live: when people get tired of paying monthly for the priveledge of simply being able to use their toy, they'll migrate to other companies. (I base this on the fact that Microsoft charges for their online service while Sony's has always been free. By now, they will see what a selling point it is, and probably have an equivalent... maybe free? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, Microsoft will be charging for theirs, so even if Sony's isn't free, they'll be on even ground.)

Wow... that was a really long post. Time to go back to my Calculus! :D Cheerio!

EDIT: Basically, I'm agreeing with what Achilles3 said... lol.
