Crystal Dynamics has announced that 12 developers will be laid off as part of the "rescoping" of a mysterious new project, which may or may not be the "wildly cool" title we wrote about in early May. "We've made some decisions at Crystal Dynamics last week around the second project we're working on, which has resulted in a small number of roles (roughly 12) becoming redundant as we re-scope the project," the studio wrote in a statement to Kotaku. "This doesn't affect the Tomb Raider development team, who as confirmed last week are well into production on a next-generation sequel. We're a close-knit team at Crystal and wouldn't be making these changes if we didn't feel it was absolutely necessary.
"We'll help those affected as best we can and we want to thank them for their hard work and commitment. If anyone is looking for development talent, please contact [email protected][SUP][1][/SUP] and we'll put you in touch direct."
Square Enix announced that a next generation Tomb Raider is "well into development" earlier this month. Europe and North America CEO Phil Rogers took the opportunity to reassure fans, investors and staff about the company's recent financial woes (it recorded a net loss of $134 million for the last fiscal year).
"We've recently re-orientated our studio leadership to focus production expertise at the top, to allow us to ship the best quality games possible, faster and with better cost control," he wrote. "We've taken away administrative duties from studio heads, so they get closer to the games, gameplay and gamers with fewer distractions.
"We've made these changes to all of our studios in the Americas and Europe and we believe this will improve not only the quality of our games, but also improve the time between releases."
Let's hope there are no more layoffs. If you're among those affected, best of luck. For more on Tomb Raider's future, read this interview - alas, it seems Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was a one-off.
