I've got the same sort of scenario as others with "no bios update found" messages (particularly one post from 5-15-05 at 6:46 am) but with a twist perhaps (?) The twist: it seems to me like the CD isn't even being read before it already jumps to the error message. (That is, the instant the drive door triggers a sensor that it's closing, I get the "not found" message. I don't hear or feel the drive spinning up until a split second or second later. Can that be? Is there any sort of hardware or software malfunction which could cause FlashBios to trigger the error message before the CD is actually read? A loose solder joint, anything of the sort? (I've check all my solder joints, btw and FWIW, with a magnifying lamp, but my eyes aren't all *that* great anyway.)
This is what I've got:
1) Original Xbox, v1.0, from Mexico, with Thomson drive (TGM600)
2) Thomson drive replaced months ago with Samsung drive (SDG-605B) when Thomson started malfunctioning.
3) Original WD HDD started clacking (berry bad!) and replaced now with WD3200JB, hoping to partition and format the latter soon as BIOS update works.
4) X3CE chip, installed via LPC header, D0, HDD, LAN wires, switch bank, etc. per X3CE.pdf instructions.
5) FlashBIOS v3.0.x boots up with quick power button tap, M$ dashboard with long power button press.
6) No FRAG or anything like that. (Xbox power LED is green, Xecuter logo on switch bank is blue.)
7) X3 bios (latest, 1MB, for Xbox v1.0 to v1.5) and dummy (100MB) burned to Imation Data CD-RW per FlashBIOS/Nero instructions found here, at 4x, (can't select slower speed) following all screens to the letter.
8) I select "burn from disc" from FlashBIOS menu, ROM drive tray pops out, I set switches 1 and 2 to the "on" position, all others (3-5) left to "off," drop CD-RW in, push tray in, and as the tray catches (mechanism picks up where I leave off) FlashBIOS reports:
CD-Rom Label:
No Bios Update Found... Halting!
The tray is all the way inside now, the drive spins up, and... too late?!?!? Or is the CD read so fast I perceive it as not being "in" already when it's not the case?
The Samsung drive was working just fine when the original HDD crapped out, so I assume it should still be working fine, but I'm at my wits end.
Side note: I noticed that my X3CE modchip says "Red
rotect/Green:Unprotect" on it while the X3CE.pdf photo has a modchip with just the opposite written on it: "Red:Unprotect/Green
rotect."
In any case, I've tried the chip's switch set in either direction, and external switches 1 and 2 turned on, and no combination has worked.
I can't load the BIOS from the hard drive since it's not partitioned and formatted yet, and as for a network, I don't have one (yet) but that'll be my next option to try.
I got the modchip just so I could pop in my own larger (and functioning) HD, don't care about anything unsigned or anything like that right now, just want to fix the box, so it'd be ashame if after getting this far it didn't work.
Any suggestions? TIA
