Here's a tutorial I made for all of you who want to do a DVD Window but don't want to risk messing up your XBOX or just wanted a tutorial to make it easier and better.

1: get to your dvd drive, unscrew the top metal piece off it. cut the sides with a hacksaw at halfway across the "disc" on top (the small metal disc thats under the sticker). Don't cut the disc! Now carefully bend the metal so that it just bends off from around the disc eventually, this is a much easier and neater way to get the metal off than cutting around the disc. Screw it back as it was when you've done this. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR EYES WHEN WORKING WITH METAL, SMALL SHARDS ARE EVERYWHERE! YOU DON'T WANT SHARDS IN YOUR EYES!!!! (I say this 'cos one of my art teachers got a shard in her eyes and had to go to eye infirmary, it took hours to get out and was very painful, and now she wears glasses.)

2: Now cut out the shape you want from your XBOX case lid so that you can see the dvd drive through it.

Now make a "window" from perspex/plexiglass or if you want to save money, a CD case. Cd cases crack very easily though. I recommend putting electrical tape on the clear stuff you use when cutting and sanding it because this prevents scratches and this tape is easy to remove, no residue, unlike sticky-tape.

For my window I did a rounded disc shape with the bottom part straight, (see photo attached).

If you want led's in your xbox case to light up the dvd, fit them now. You can see how I fitted mine in some of the photos attached. For the bottom one, i dremeled a small hole in the case to put the led in level with the others.

3: Now use electrical tape to make a ledge for your clear plastic window to rest in (to make it level with the case when you glue it there).

4: Place the window in the hole and press firmly to the electrical tape so that it is level with your xbox case's lid on the outside.

5: Tape up the inside of the window with electrical tape (to prevent getting glue on the middle of your window, although the glue I say to use dries clear so it won't be that noticable if you accidentally get some there) leaving a very small edge for the glue to be placed.

6: Use EVO-STIK wood adhesive to glue the window in place. This dries clear like plastic or glass so if your window has a few gaps, it will fill them up and look like part of the window so don't worry. Now while the glue is still wet, carefully and slowly peel the electrical tape off. Use a scalpel to pick and raise the tape from the middle of the window if necessary.

7: If you want, you can neaten the glue's edges with a damp piece of kitchen roll.

Put your XBOX back together, and now you have a cool (light-up) DVD Window.

Here are the rest of the photos. I'll post a photo of my XBOX's DVD Window when the glue has dried.
(Don't worry about the foil in my XBOX lid, I put it there a LONG TIME ago before I knew what the metal sheet was for that you remove for this mod and others.)

Oooooh, your wires are so neat and organized! :) Mine are definately not... it's a jungle in there. I have to take great pains to open and close the entire case. I ought to take a page out of your book, get longer wires, and neatly glue them around the edge with proper connectors. How 'bout a tutorial, 'ol Freaky? ;) No, seriously, good tutorial. I think it derserves a sticky, but these forums aren't traditionally the location for those. Perhaps you ought to send it in to XBox Scene or XBox Transformed. I'm sure they might post it.

My XBOX's glue is nearly dry. New step for this tutorial: About 2 hours after finishing the previous steps, carefully and slowly peel the electrical tape off the lid of the XBOX, the glue might have managed to get through, if it has, again, get some kitchen rolll, dampen it, and wipe off the glue, use two dry pieces of kitchen roll after to wipe any little bits that might still be there: hold the one piece on the inside of the dvd window, and the other on the top. This way you won't get fingerprints all over the inside of the dvd window. Mine should be finished tonight, so I'll post photos when it is.:D

Linuxnoob, thnaks for the "sticky" suggestion.:) I think so too 'cos I have never found a tutorial for a DVD Window, which is one of the most wanted customisations for XBOX I would think. This is in "XBOX Customisations" after all so I think it should be OK.

I tried to send tutorials to xbox-scene before, but it didn't work I can't remember why. Those two tuts are now called "Check this out" in "XBOX Customisations" here on this site: (reduce your temps for the cpu and mobo by 16 degreesC each).

OK, here's my XBOX with the DVD Window fitted. I haven't soldered the led's to the +5V yet 'cos I want to add more stuff to my XBOX in addition to this, I will post a photo of it when I have added all the other stuff.
I heated the glue up with a hairdyer the other day to make it dry quicker and I forgot that my led's were attached with hot glue, so one fell out :). I'll put it back soon. The camera flash has made the plastic edges look white, they are clear in reality.

I noticed something else, when I used the haidryer on it, the cd case/window, melted to the exact curve of the XBOX lid, it looks cool when light catches it at an angle. I did a real good job of this window, it is perfectly level with the XBOX lid :D.

I hope this tutorial is useful to you, it's the first tutorial for a DVD Window I think. Enjoy.
