Given that it has almost the entirety of human history to play with, and that it's currently releasing games at the breakneck rate of one per year, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Assassin's Creed franchise will go on making games until the end of time. However, there is a fixed end to the series, even if its creators aren't yet sure when that end will come. "We have multiple development teams, then we have the brand team that sits on top and is filled with writers and designers concerned with the series' overall arc," Assassin's Creed 4 game director Ashraf Ismail told Eurogamer. "So there is an overall arc, and each iteration has its place inside this.
"We have an idea of where the end is, what the end is. But of course Yves [Guillemot, Ubisoft's CEO] announced we are a yearly title, we ship one game a year. So depending on the setting, depending on what fans want, we've given ourselves room to fit more in this arc. But there is an end."
Another way of putting that, perhaps, is that the series' end will be stalled for as long as the games continue to sell well.
Ismail went on to point out one of the benefits of having so many games in development simultaneously was that development teams were able to work together to hint at possible future titles or foreshadow later events, creating a richer world lore.
"We're now able to seed stuff earlier and earlier in our games," Ismail said. "So for example in [AC4] we have Edward, who was seeded in AC3. But there's a lot more stuff in our game that is hinting at other possibilities."
Do you think the series should be allowed to continue for as long as it can? Or should Ubisoft prioritise story, and simply aim for a more satisfying narrative conclusion to the franchise?
