The iron with my Aoyue 968 is awesome. Probably the same iron. Heats up quick. That's a good price.

couldn't agree more, I use the same one as well, it's a really good soldering iron.

I'm looking for an easy to use soldering station for a beginner , i believe it should have a small tip ( 0.5mm or 0.8mm i hear is good for RGH ) , also i believe a noob will have a steadier hand if the distance between the handle and the tip is as small as possible ( imagine writing a letter with a pen and imagine doing it with a soldering iron , it's more precise with the pen , right ? )

So , do you think this soldering station would be apropiate for me , or do you have any "shorter" one to recommend ?

What kind of tip is most appropiate for a RGH install ? Does the station need to be grounded ?
Do you think the Weller WHS-MC would be appropiate for the job ?

I use a very fine (0.1MM) soldering iron tip.

Any variable temperature soldering station should do the job just fine.

I have my soldering station set to around 400 degrees, but I have soldering experience and I wouldn't advise using such a high temperature for a novice.

With such a small tip you need some technique to solder well . I watched a tutorial on Youtube where a guy used a chisel tip to solder wires , and it turned out very well for him . But it was some old circuits , with big big solder points , not the case with modern boards .
BL4K3Y , can you explain what is your technique ?

I do things like this:

  • Clean - clean solder points before tinning them (rubbing alcohol (IPA) works great).
  • Flux - apply flux to remove oxides when applying solder (good quality flux is a must - I recommend AMTECH).
  • Tin - apply a small amount of fresh solder to solder points (don't apply too much, but at the same time, you want enough solder on there for your wire to adhere to).
  • Solder - solder your wire to the freshly cleaned and tinned solder point (heat the point for a couple of seconds and feed your wire on to it then remove your iron and give the solder time to cool (2 or 3 seconds is usually enough time)).
  • Clean - clean up any excess flux after soldering (rubbing alcohol (IPA) works great).

Once you learn how to solder, you will find your own technique.

When you learn to solder, don't apply too much heat to a solder pad for too long or you will lift it.
