Unable to Flash

Hi, I have an Xecuter3 CE chip with Xapt3r. My Xbox version is 1.0. I install everything no problem, and turning on the xbox caused me to go to the flashbios screen. When I enable network and then browse to the DHCP ip, it works fine. But, when I load the X3_3294.bin file and choose flash, the flash procedure fails because the browser says the page could not be found. I set the bank switches to on on off off off on the front panel... Then i cannot boot into bios at all...get green/red flashing around the eject button and the X on the bank panel turns red (it was blue before). What's wrong??

Turn on your xbox by pressing both Eject and power buttons together. This should bring up flashbios again and you can try flashing again. If it fails again, you can try setting your computer to a static IP and letting the xbox fall back to 192.168.0.99 and try that way.

Pressing both start and eject gave me the backup version of flashbios (purple indicator). I tried to flash with a CDRW this time, but it failed again...

Label: X3_BIOS
BiosUpdate: /BIOS.BIN (1024k)
Unkniwn Flash! Halting.

Also, DHCP works fine, but for some reason after loading up website at the DHCP'd ip, uploading never makes it to the xbox... I get no indication of it working on the TV screen.

Another thing to note, I can't seem to repeatedly do the backup function. Sometimes pressing both buttons triggers it, other times I just the flashing eject button and no flashbios screen at all...

Okay, another update. So with some luck of the draw, I was able to flash the bios successfully by unplugging the front panel at the panel side and then using the same cdrw that would give that "halting" message before. This time it worked fine, and the flashing went thru (why??). I was then able to boot the the x3 config.

However, there still seems to be something fundamentally wrong. Turning the xbox off and then on again does not always work. I have to wait for some time (5-10 min) before I can boot again. If i don't, then i simply get a flashing eject button and a red indicator on the front panel. Should I leave the switches on the front panel to (on on off off off -- 1MB bank all the time?) Or can the bank switches be set to anything after flashing??

When I choose the option "Reboot to Dashboard" in the x3 config, i simpy get a blank screen. I ftp'd over EvoX into the C: drive on the xbox, and set the option to disable the boot to config, but still its no go. Is the chip overheating or something??

Thanks in advance for your help

Once you flash a bios to a particular bank, you will have to boot to the same bank. Unless you flash different bios to another bank.

Check the pins on your switch panel and cable connections, maybe some are bent or broken.

Well, it seems that unplugging the front panel wasn't what did it (at least in my opinion).

What I think is happening, is the chip (or the xapt3r) is overheating and stops working for some amount of time until it cools off, then things all work. It will not boot 2 times in a row! The first boot (after the cooling period) works well, then selecting reboot from the Evox menu or pressing the reset button just gives me the flashing eject and a red indicator. Has there been any precedent for this type of periodic behavior?

I did some searches on this forum, and found a few people with similar problems... Is the recommended method for solving this problem to do a solder install and to crank up the fan? Or did I misunderstand/misdiagnose the problem?

Overheating usually gives you a solid orange ring around your eject button from memory,

Is the disable function working properly? Could it be that you are sometimes holding the power button too long and it's trying to boot disabled.

Turn off xbox and press the power button in for 3-5 seconds and see if you get the regular M$ Dash. If it works, try it again and see if you get the same frag on reboot?

I always see an orange ring around the eject button when I am in the bios screen.

I tap it for a really short time, and also tried pressing Eject, also for a short time

I can get the regular MS Dash without a problem... I think. I will check back and tell you if the same problem persists.

I have also upped the fan speed to 40% a little while ago, and I will test in a couple of hours if I get the same behavior. Switching to the dashboard after navigating the bios for a few minutes worked fine after the fan speed increase though, so I am a little more optimistic about it being a matter of excess heat opening a connection with the d0 lead or something (Xapt3r...) so the fan thing might help.

I cant select how to Flash Bios

I just put X3 in my 1.0 Xbox and all seems to be working. Two blues one red on chip and blue lights on switch. It gets to the screen that I need to select how to get the bios like http or HDD, lock and unlock HD but I cant move the highlight or select anything. What could be wrong. Yes the controller is plugged in to the #1 slot.:(

Nope, booting to the regular MS Dash fails when in this state... It just flashes the eject button and the indicator X is red....Fan speed didn't help...

It would appear you have a solder splash on your D0 or some other problem causing your M$ dash not to load. Take a look inside your xbox for anything out of the ordinary.

Hmm... Since I am using the Xapt3r, I would assume that the d0 contact heats up a bit and loses connection. This would explain this cooldown period during which it cannot boot, but after which it works fine and dandy.

When I feel up to it, I will attempt to do the solder install with the X3CE, and I guess as a nice benefit ill get the LED's to flash on the front panel also :D

As an aside, are there any guides on how to install applications under UnleashX? Or is it as simple as dropping them into E:\Apps\APP_NAME with a default.xbe in the APP_NAME folder? I don't seem to get any new apps under the Applications menu in the UX dash, so maybe I have to edit the xml to get items to show up in there?

Thanks

Yeah, take your time practice a little soldering first. Good way to go though.

It really is that simple. Have a look at your UX xml file and you should have the line AUTO = on (in your apps section) and the Path should be like you just said above.

Just coming back with an update -- I got it working! Turns out there was no soldering required. I correctly identified the problem as the d0 connection on the Xapt3r, so I opened up the case, and used a pair of small needle-nose pliers to apply more force to the wire than i could with my fingers and pushed it into the d0 hole. Worked like a charm. Hope it lasts! I've stress-tested the xbox for many hours now, and it seems to work well.

On another side note, I am using the XBMC as a dashboard and couldn't be happier -- best dash in my humble opinion.
