Understanding programmer

My neighbor tried to flash his own 2.6CE, and borked both banks. He bought a programmer and brought it over to me since he was lost.
Now I have a programmer, with no dox. I tried to read the online stuff, but I can't get the images to load on the how-to so I'm a little confused with the whole deal. The programmer has 4 fewer pins than the CE. Does it plug in hanging out over the back edge of the programmer? Or does it hang over the 9V battery? Do I need to remove the pin-plug that's on the CE to plug it in that way, or does it fit on the last pins? (I can't tell which is pin 1 on either by looking). I tried to plug it in, and am powering the programmer via USB, but the light on the CE never comes on. Do I need to connect the external 5V to feed the chip? I know these are idiot questions, so be gentle.
Thanks in advance.

right when you sit the programmer, say on the table, with the pins towards you,put the chip on the programmer so it does not over hang the battery, 1st do not remove any pins off it, when you want to sit the chip on the programer look at the pins on the programmer and the chip the correct way round, place the chip on the pins, start at the right of the pins so you miss the 2 off the left hand side when the chip sits down, there will be no pins inserted in the chips left sockets. If you are using a usb there is no need for the 9v battery or the 5v lead. hope this helps

Thanks. I that helped a lot. Also didn't know I needed the switch bank plugged in with it to program it.
Appreciate the help!

Yes, the switch is needed for programmer...it should be flash protect off and enable chip on. Take a look at your chip's pin header socket and you'll see a covered slot (pin #16) and that corresponds to the missing pin on the programmer on one end.
