Ok so my buddy was playing on my xbox today. He got a little pissed and threw down the controller, he then got up and turn the xbox off. Now he said that a little static shocked him while he was pressing the power button.
After he turned it off i turned it back on. the red LED on the switch came on and an error 5 popped up on the screen. Now i know that this error means something about HD unlocked or something like that. Now i managed to get to the X3 backup. I locked the HD and now the original Ms Dash comes up. I tried reflashing the chip with the latest bios using the http method but all i get is an "Unknown flash! Halting" message come up on the screen. I tried using the FTP method but it wont connect. Whats going on?

I have an X3 Chip, with Flashbios 3.0.1, and yes tried updating the Flashbios to 3.0.3 but comes up with the same message.

Please help

Sounds to me like it's not a flash problem. If you turn on the box with a quick push of the power button you should get the Blue X3, but you said your getting a red X3. You also said you can get to the backup bios. This is kinda wierd! I'd crack open the box and have a look. See if something happened when your mate got a shock. See if you still have all the right led's on your chip and stuff like that.

Ok i checked the LED on the actual chip. I have a blue LED and where the flash protect is a red LED.

Wow...

I'd get your jerk-ass friend to buy you a new XBox. It sounds like a short somewhere.

Well the box is fine it will still boot up to MS Dash. Once there i can check the hard drive and see that all my games and apps are still on there. So if anythin all i need to do is get a new chip. Unless one of you guys can help me figure it out.

You do know that both of those bios's are for flashing only.

Don't you want 3108 or 3029?

I guess you can see if your chip is seated wrong maybe it got jostled...

Yeah i know those are for flashing only.
I tried 3108 and 3029 but it still comes up with the Unknown Flash. Now i have held off on flashing from a disc but i will give that a try and see if i get any further.

Ok so i tried with a disc flashing method and i got the same message. It recognized the disc and found the Bios. but then popped up that dreaded message. I think it is safe to say that the static shock knocked out the bios, probably erasing it. the shock most likely knocked out the chips ability to determine wether it was in flash protect mode or not. So looks like im shelling out for another $50 chip. Great :(
