try the wire the chances of the switches going bad are slim but i have had many box's were the wire was ran above the network plug or in a tight spot and they never made room for the wires so when they put the box together it would work fine until the moved it or the cable wiggled a little the it would stop working, becuse it caused a pinch point.

Ironically I had a random interval frag issue some time ago, turned out it was a pin header istall and the chip just came unseated. Opened the box and pushed it down and it would work fine for awhile. I tried spreading the pins a bit to help holding it down and finally resorted to putting a small line of superglue on the tip of a zip tie and sliding it across the seam. Its enough to hold it and not to much to break anything if I need to remove it.
