hi,

Just to let you know that i was messing with a console which a guy had lost his dummy.bin and fried the board (putting the ck3 cable connection upside down and switching on)

I had a spare drive and flashed it to stock with one of my random benq keys i had backed up. I thought what the hell and tried to update to 13599 and it did it no problem. I then dumped the firmware and to my surprise it had flashed the correct key back to the drive. I then flashed LT1.91 to it and it now plays originals and backups.

So to those who have lost their key and have a dvd player gathering dust in the wardrobe try it and see if it works
No harm eh?

Yeah this does work, I have done it twice myself. I buy alot of broken consoles from people, and there's been times I was lied to about what was wrong with them when I bought them. But I tried this on them when the update came out and it worked. Works on a slim too.

I don't understand why this hasn't been a bigger news item? Unless I missed it somewhere...!

This is the first one mate, but i was as shocked as most are.

i dunno if it works for all drives/consoles but it did for me

This is what I did:

random benq drive
(dashboard was on 12625)
flashed it to pre 13146 stock fw with random original benq key.
updated to 13599 dash via USB
read key and it was different.
wrote LT1.91 (0442)
BINGO working drive

Drive key @ 0xE030 23D26FFA98377AC404AAC9B9046F153D (from benq i had laying around)

Drive key @ 0xA020 F7ABEA750085A92C767747FC97CC4392 (after 13599 update)

Notice the different key location??

that interesting so i would assume it would work on all drives that get reflashed by the dash update, would be interesting to see if it would work on a sammy as they dont really get updated but had some files added to the firmware

Yeah... tried this out with a Benq and USB containing the update just for sh*ts... as expected it did not work. Updated the firmware, kept the key the same and at the same location that it was in the firmware before updating. Not saying it was for you, but for me it was a major fail. Of course the xbox was on dashboard 8955... that may have something to do with it IDK.

I also tried it on a LiteON, 12625 to 13599...no dice.

I've had problems everytime I tried to use the USB method, so I just use originals to update the boxes. Should it matter what drive I use? I have a couple dvd players sitting around but don't know if I have a benq. I would like to at least try this.
