do I do it right first time using updsvr???? sorry still a noob at some things

You should really try reading the J-Runner TUT. but since you probably wont, here goes.

you put the stock system update in the j-runner\xebuild\<Dash Version>\$systemupdate, the download System Update downloads the latest version from microsoft, so you need to download the the stock update for the dash you are building manually.

Did you download the correct update-files? If so it should have installed the kinnect and avatars data, and if it didn't then rename it $$ystemupdate and put it on usb to install the kinnect and avatars files.

I tried didn't work :/, but when I tried to just send avatar data through jrunner it said no HDD available, do I need a HDD to update? I didn't see that in tut.

If you want to update the avatar data that way, then yes you do. Updserv option isnt programmed to update avatar data on a MU.
