I recently flashed my samsung drive to the Xtreme Firmware 5.2 and everything worked fine for around 4 weeks. My 360 then started freezing up and eventually led up to the 3 rings of doom. I then read around the net about using the "towel method." I wrapped a towel completely around my 360 for around 15-20 minutes. Low and behold, my 360 worked again.....for approximately 10-20 minutes, then it started to freeze up and got the red rings again. I repeated the towel method and got my 360 to work again, but the red rings again after 20 minutes of playing. I am wondering if anyone has an idea what exactly should I be looking for after opening my 360 so i can fix the problem. I have great solder skills and just need to know what to look out for inside. My 360 was manufactured 2006-07-11. Thanks for all your assistance.

There is no permanent fix. There are many temporary tricks you could try like the "heat gun fix" , using Arctic Silver 5 on the heatsinks, and most recently I've heard of sticking a thick object underneath the center of the X clips on the bottom side of the motherboard to increase the "pull" on the heatsinks.

None of them are temporary fixes.

i heard that the longer you leave the towels wrapped around the console, the longer it will continue working. instead of doing it for 15 mins try 2 hours. there is a method explaining this somewhere online. hope this may help you out

Gonna ask a silly question here, what is the 3 rings of death??
This is when you get 3 of the 4 lights on your 360 (usually the green control pad lights) turn red, see below:

So going on this, has anyone tried an external cooler and has experienced the 3 rings of death? I was thinking about buying an external cooler, but was curious about people's experiences.

ok i been searching all day becuase my 360 got put in its death bed today them damn lights. anyway i dont give up lol i read the 3 light problem happens becuase of a solding problems heating it, or letting it over heat, heats the solder back up and fixes it for a short while i think leaving it under a towel for longer is good but kind of a waste of time. the heat gun trink is a good idea but who has a heat gun? lol i know i dont. anyway what i did to bring my 360 back to life was... treat it like a new born lol turn it on rap it in a blanket
and pull out a blow dryer let the 360 heat up for about 5 mins under the blanket and then turn the blow dryer on low air as hot as it gets blow the hell out of your xbox while its runing do this for about 10 mins move the blow dryer all over the top of your motherboard make sure to get the places by the power and video cables after about 10 mins turn it off and turn it back on it should work mine has ran for about 6 hours today with no problems lets hope it stays that way (-=

It's trial and error but it's normally down to the GPU not bedded in correct and broken pads etc.

It's all about how you go about it, wrapping the 360 in a towel and using a hair dryer just is not going to cut it don't get me wrong there is no permanant fix as such but you can increase your chances of succes.

1. Strip the xbox 360
2. Remove both heatsinks and remove old thermal epoxy with a citrus based cleaner.

3. mask of all plastic parts caps etc only revealing the GPU, memory and south bridge.

4. heat the area's asper this video (bottom left) http://www.freepler.de/userdaten/38928917/html/hp/extras.html

5. let it cool down without touching it for atleast 30 mins

6. now apply new thermal epoxy to the CPU and GPU (artic silver 5 is the best)

7. put back together/test

I take my time on these and normally provides the best results.
I have done 5 now and not one has repoted the fault again.

Hope this helps anybody

In a nutshell if you cut corners expect bad results :)
