Hi,

I have a 4TB Samsung portable HDD, I've put all of my games on to it but when I plug it in to the console it crashes and give an error message.

1) Is the power enough to run this drive
2) Do I need to format this to FAT32 or NTFS
3) Is there anything that I need to configure on the colsole
4) Am I ok to have the same games on the SD card as well as the HDD? - Some I play portable some not

Thanks

Not sure man but exFAT is probably best. Easier and better just to use SD card so you can still inject payload by USBC but wait until some more knowledgeable guys get back to you

Just checked and it is formatted to exFAT, just get an error message when it scans the drive and the Switch crashes

exFat is actually susceptible to corruption, but I prefer it so I do not have to split my files. Just have to make sure you close your apps properly before undocking or anything.

As for the crashing issue, does it crash if you try only have your SD card in and let it scan? Do you have another external drive you can try? Maybe something smaller?

Checked the SD Card only and it show all the games fine. I've noticed that thers no power light on the drive so I'm guessing thats the issue. Just wondering what the max size for a portable HDD would the switch support? I might have to copy everything over to a powered 3.5" drive instead.

as of 2.2.1. If you are using a lower SX version than that's probably your issue.

  • Support for *big* USB drives
In our last announcement we bragged that you were able to enjoy TERABYTES of content, which was technically correct.. but in practice you were still limited to USB drives with a capacity up to 2TB. This is now a limitation of the past, as you are now able to use storage devices with a capacity of up to a PETABYTE!

I have a 2tb drive in an ac powered enclosure. It is formatted as exfat. Ive tried MBR and GPT. I cannot get sx os to recognize the XCI on the drive at all. I have a 320gb hard drive which draws its power fro the usb port formatted exactly the same way and it works fine. Curious as to why i cant get the larger drive to work.

What version of SX are you using?

Sorry. Not honestly sure since I don't use and external hdd. Is this through the new installer or through the old one?

I'm honestly not sure what you mean by installer. Sorry.
No worries. It sounds like you are just going to the album and launching/installing games from there. TX recently released an installer that has more features. It's actual app.

Yes that's what I've been doing. I found the installer nro and it can't see the USB either. Kind of a bummer because I'd like to keep the growing library somewhere when I don't need to go portable and leave the SD card for emulation etc

i have the same issue, i don't know why it's crashing during the scan... it's not each time.

Use SSD drives. They work fine
SSD might fix some issues, but that's not going to fix a problem of the switch crashing. Something else is happening.

Sounds like you have a corrupt file or files. It will be a process to figure out which one, but I think that's your best bet.

Do you have another drive you can test with? It's possible that you also have a corrupt file. Maybe try putting only a few backups first and see what happens?

I think no, because the crash is not reproduced each time.
You didn't really give much info to go on. Do you have your own thread with your issue and more details? If it is failing during the scan it's most likely do a corrupt file or files. Do you know what file it fails on?

I have used the original installer to install backups from my SD without issue and now I use the new SX installer to install backups from a network drive with no issues. They both work as they are intended so if you are having issues then it is something with your setup.

In my case, ive tried multiple drives. The only one ive gotten to work is the drive that draws power from usb. baffling
