Using kamikaze on MXIC & 16d5s question

First, the question about kamikaze on the MXIC slims.

I have done 4 kamikaze's on winbond(with MAXIMUS template and included hand drill) and they were all successful. I have done 1 MXIC with the SPUTNIK probe and it was successful also. I recently found out though that people are able to kamikaze the MXIC instead of probing it.

The kamikaze is much easier IMO than scraping and cutting traces, and if I ever need to update a kamikaze it saves a lot of time also to just put alcohol in the hole rather than desolder and probe an MXIC again.

My question is, will the kamikaze work on ALL mxic boards? Even newer models, etc? I don't want to start doing the kamikaze on an MXIC and have it be one that doesn't work for some reason.

Now the 16d5s question, when did they start appearing in 360's? As a general rule I have been telling people that I can do almost all 2010 and 2011 slims, but that I can't do ANY 2012 slims. I've searched and the first thing I see on a d5s is sometime in mid 2012, but is that the first time they appear in slims? If so, the only thing stopping me from doing 2012 slims is the occasional Hitachi and occasional 16d5s?

Thanks.

You have GOT to be sh*tting me.

You think that aligning, marking, drilling and hoping you've got it right is MUCH easier than exposing a trace with a fibre-glass pen and then cutting with a blade, you're doing it monumentally wrong.

I would Sputnik all day, every day. Assuming you're not a 3 fingered monkey and can handle a soldering iron, it's risk free.

I attempted a kamikaze on an MXIC board because I'd seen someone saying it worked and I wanted to see for myself. I don't know if I'd say it's easier than installing a sputnik but I enjoy it more. :)

Unfortunately it didn't work, compared to 40 or so winbonds that have, so it's unlikely to be a coincidence.

Strangely it didn't ruin the drive. It still plays and ejects fine but won't unlock. I went really deep too :rolleyes2:

Also you can get to the sputnik switch from the top of the drive without removing the board, so in terms of hassle to re-unlock, should be on par with the alcohol method.

Sorry I just assumed the template was a TX product. Are there any 16d4s 2012 slims at all?

And I know you said kamikaze a MXIC will work, but just to double check, it will work for all of them? I just didnt know if some later ones had moved the wire you need to get to.

Thanks again

All 2012 slims are going to be 16D5S.

Drop the idea of kamikaze-unlocking MXIC and get someone to show you how to use a fibre-glass pen, exacto knife and a soldering iron.

Not sure why you would be so negative to a customer of yours, but I do know how to use all of the above. I have been soldering for years and used to do the full read on the liteons before PMT was discovered, which required exacto knife and glass pen too.

I will continue to sputnik the MXIC boards but it is still my opinion that doing a kamikaze is easier.

You're confusing negativity with 'common sense'.

Sputnik unlocks carry ZERO risk. They take 5 mins MAXIMUM.

I'm curious as to what part of the Sputnik hack you're finding harder than precise measurement of drilling into an IC.

Still sounds negative to me.

Desoldering the wires, removing the screws to take the board out, scratching off the green then cleaning up with a pen, probing then soldering the cut trace, putting board and screw back in then soldering back the wires not only seems like a lot more steps, but is.

And I don't count pins or any of that, I just put the template on the board and drill. I've done 4 this way without error and plenty of others say they've done a lot more than 4 with the template.

1. take 1 screw out
2. desoldering the wires? not necessary.
3. 15 seconds of scraping
4. 10 seconds to cut the trace
5. probe to unlock
6. resolder trace
7. put back together drive
8. read/write
9. relock
10. play games

I'm pretty sure I didn't claim to be a badass for doing 4. I was making it clear that with the template you don't need to count pins etc.

Wow! 4 drives??? It MUST be easier!

FYI, I have a Maximus template which has been wrong on at least 3 occasions, so good luck with that.

As jsinger47 says, remove one screw, ribbon cables and flip over. don't need to desolder anything (this is of course for people who know what they're doing).

Do I care you're a T-X customer? No. You're spouting nonsense and nonsense spreads quicker than truth in these parts. Not going to agree with you being retarded, if that's what you're waiting for.

I don't recommend to do kamikaze on MXIC. While developing MXIC UnLock (you called it "Sputnik") we found that MXIC often has different EEPROM position so drive could be damaged while drilling (because of different wires position)

New assignment for you Sputnik nerds:

16d5s read/write

I expect that on my desk by Tuesday :p

EDIT: apparently "R.u.s.s.i.a.n" is auto-corrected to "Sputnik" here. Strange
