v1.6/2.6ce Pinheader Install Frags

Hi,

I am currently having a fragging problem (surprise surprise) with my 2.6ce chip. This is my first attempt at modding an Xbox, and I'm starting to suspect that I may have been unlucky enough to get a dodgy chip. Anyway, the full story:
  • My Xbox is v1.6
  • I bought a 2.6ce chip and Xapter 1.6 solderless adapter
  • Tried installing with adapter - all lights appear on the adapter, light appears on chip, all connections seem fine - but when testing it just did the usual frag routine. Boots up fine with the chip disabled.
  • Re-installed the adapter a couple of times, still no luck.
At this point I did some reading here and got the impression that the Xapter often has problems, so I decided to solder it instead. I got my flatmate to do this as he is a better solderer than I am. Anyway:
  • Pinheader install, with necessary pin removed
  • Used wires rather than LPC rebuild board
  • Tested again - chip lights up but the Xbox still frags.
  • Both my flatmate and I have checked all the connections, especially D0, and they all seem fine
  • Tried every combination of switch settings (flash protect/memory bank), still no luck
I've done a search here but ran out of advice. I read something about dodgy external switches, and someone recommended testing the LPC voltages, but I don't know what to check them against. Beyond that, all I can think of is that the chip is broken. How likely is this? Does anyone have any other advice?

Thanks!

So, I take it that those voltages apply to a 1.6 Xbox as well? The tutorial says something about it being for versions 1.0-1.5...

I believe with the LPC rebuild in place they should apply to the 1.6, but can't say for certian. BTW, your mate should have tried the LPC rebuild board. I've done both installs and since Xecuter released the LPC board 1.6es are cake, hella lot easier than messing with wires. Don't worry about testing D0, by getting a FRAG with the mod enabled and stock dash with it disabled this shows that both your D0 and LPC ground points are good. Make sure that the plugs for the switches are fully seated and maybe try excercising the switches a bit... move them back and forth quickly. Can help clean up the contacts if they are flakey. Have you tried booting from both banks on the chip? On a 1.6 it is possible one of the banks with FlashBIOS will frag and the other work fine. Differences in video chips and FlashBIOS 3.01 and 3.03 I believe.

Tested the voltages - everything seems correct except for pin 3 (LFRAME) - instead of 3.3V, I am getting 0V. I am assuming that this indicates a fault somewhere? Once again, I'm not sure if there are meant to be differences between the 1.6 and earlier Xboxes discussed in the tutorial...

I just looked at the wire install info, pin 3 doesn't get used so I'm not sure if it may have relocated to a different point. I took a look at a wire header and X3 I had around, couldn't get any better idea. What about pin 15? Do you get 3.3v there? If all pins from 1-12 look good with the exception of 3, I would suggest your mate check the soldering on 13-16. These pins weren't used by Xecuter chips at the time the test page was written, but they are now. Possible one of those is bad but unless an expanded LPC test is found I got nothing else.

Yeah, I'm getting 3.3V on pin 15. Here's the full list of voltages:

Pin 1: 0V
Pin 2: 0V
Pin 3: 0V
Pin 4: N/A
Pin 5: 0.2V
Pin 6: N/A
Pin 7: 3.3V
Pin 8: 3.3V
Pin 9: 0V
Pin 10: 3.3V
Pin 11: 3.3V
Pin 12: 0V
Pin 13: 3.3V
Pin 14: 3.3V
Pin 15: 3.3V
Pin 16: N/A

Out of interest, I tested the voltages when the chip was plugged in (I haven't stuck on the sticky padding yet so I can access the holes on the bottom of the chip). When the chip is installed, the hole at pin 3's location now has 2.9V going through it. I don't know if that is relevant...
