Any dashboard or other mod app that runs an FTP server can be used to make a bootable disc. I just discovered that UnleashX handles new HDD installs very smoothly so I'll be using that for any boot discs I create. The tutorials on Xbox-Scene (link in my sig) and the HDD upgrade tut sticky in the forums here (Hardware Upgrades forum maybe?) are what I referenced when learning to make discs. Besides the FTP app you'll also likely need Qwix or Craxtion to create an Xbox-compatible ISO file (actually X-ISO file system I think) that you then burn as an image with your favorite recorder software. I've used Nero, DVD-Decrypter and CDBurner XP Pro 3 (the last two being free software) to burn the ISO image to disc. Keep in mind that Xbox DVD drives are picky about media and burning. You'll probably want to burn the image at the slowest write speed for your media and burner, and you may need to experiment with different brands of discs. I've got a Memorex DVD+RW that works fine on my Thompson drive and one other Xbox I modded, but wasn't compatible with a third. (don't remember the latter two drive manufacturers.) For that 3rd box I wound out digging out an old TDK max 4x CDRW disc and got lucky.

Don't give up if your first disc doesn't work.

Also, for your box I would recommend the X2CL 5035 BIOS. It is the latest from Team Xecuter and has buku features. There is a 1.6 compatible version, M8 is no longer required for 1.6 boxes. Found at the "usual places"... the fine xbins repository.

thx alot for the info...ya ive checked out many tutorials and still have yet to find one that explains clearly how to make this disk....i have prolly three things to choose from, slayers 2.6, avalaunch.xbe, and the evox xbe... whati really need if anyone here knows is for u guys to say, take the avalaunch.xbe or one of the above files, convert them to an xiso, and burn it, i already have the iso that came with slayers, and i put it straight onto a cdr and dvd+r and neither worked....i use nero...and i believe i have all the programs i need to convert files and whatnot.....can anyone just explain it to me? like step by step? it doesnt have to be a big tutorial or anything im not stupid but i have burned 3 disks and non have worked.....so plz if anyone can post a paragraph of what they did step by step using the programs i have that would be great...if not, ima try to keep searchin....thanks again big whoopin that kinda helped....

(also just to clarify, i have the chip flashed, works great, all i need is to make a bootable cd for some dashboard, so i can then ftp into my box and drop a dash on c:, please help......)

Just burn the ISO of Slayers that you downloaded. It should already be in xISO format. If you did that, my guess is that your drive won't read the type of media you put it on.

You could also make your own boot disc. All you would have to do is make a copy of avalaunch.xbe, and rename it to default.xbe. Now use Qwix to make an xISO of the entire folder. Burn that, and boot with it in the drive. The reason you made a copy of avalaunch.xbe is now you can copy everything from you boot disc to your drive, with the exception of default.xbe, and you will have a dashboard installed.

When burning your the discs with the Slayers install you did instruct Nero to burn the ISO file as an image, and not just drop the file into a new compilation (same way you would burn data files for backup), right?

Like fantmx's Avalaunch boot disc, UnleashX also has a file manager so you can copy over files from DVD to HDD. If you want to get around the problem of being unable to copy the default.xbe file just include an additional copy in a subfolder. Or for better organization, keep the boot files in the root of the disc and put everything you'll install in sub-folders. If you're an experienced builder you can have things pre-sorted by drive letter and such. (although the only thing I have off of my F drive is E:\x2logo.bmp.)

I've used Avalaunch as my dash for the last year+ and have liked it. But when I booted that UnleashX disc and all on its own it went "hey! you've got a new hard drive! let's get that bad boy partitioned and formatted!" (not word for word what it said, writer's embellishment) I was pretty damn impressed. Once I pause from playing games on my Xbox and actually do more tweaking of my software I'll probably be switching over to UnleashX as my dash as well.

I usually use Slayer's auto-installer coz it almost has what you want, but since your Slayer is not working you might wanna try doing this:

"How to get your dash files to the xbox without FTP?"

The first thing you need is Qwix and cd burning software (i use Nero)

this is how to build a do it yourself autoinstaller and bypass FTP

Download the Unleashx dash and any other dashes you require.

create a folder on ur pc, I called mine "AUTOINSTALLER". put the Unleashx "default.xbe" (the dash file has to be default.xbe to boot from DVD disk, unless you edit the bios first) and "config.xml" files inside. Now create a sub folder and call it "DASHES".
inside this folder put the dashboard files of any other dashes you want to load to the xbox HDD. so for instance my folder structure on my pc is as follows

C:\AUTOINSTALLER has the following files, default.xbe and config.xml
C:\AUTOINSTALLER\DASHES has the following files, Unleashx.xbe and config.xml and evoxdash.xbe and evox.ini

Open Qwix and click the create ISO button. Click the "Local Folder" option and browse to C:\AUTOINSTALLER

create the iso, it will ask for a path to save the ISO file to.
Burn to dvd-r, put the disk in the dvd drive and boot ur hacked bios. The unleashx dash should appear. use the built in file manager to copy the dash files from D:\AUTOINSTALLER\DASHES to the root of the C drive. The built in file manager has a split screen window. Bear in mind that files selected in the right hand window are copied to the left hand window(ensure you set ur paths first)

reboot and take the dvd out of the drive...

Hope this helps! :)
