I have a 1.0 with a thompson drive and it plays both dvd+r and dvd+rw disks.

dvd+ work best for me. Did you make the dummy file big enough 300 megs or so on dvd 100 or so on cd-r or cdrw

just another file to be on the disk, making it much more readable

like throwing on a ton of mp3 files or something, just get the disk to have over 100 megs of data on it, 1 100 meg file is better than 50 2 meg files though

Thompsons are pretty good about reading DVD discs...CDs are the problem :p

after i made the cuts to my pcb my drive wont eject.. is that normal.. or have i f**ked up.

you can try different levels of resistors (go down a step)
some 9xxx are picky

you also should check your cuts again, just to make sure
also, make sure you are pressing hard enough with teh probes onto metal, scrap off a little extra room to use for the probe on both the ground node and the 3.3v node
