accidently chose the wrong video format (NTSC-J as opposed to PAL) and now cannot see(produce video) to switch back. will this require a re-install?

You've unfortunately changed the video region on the Xbox EEPROM. As you have an X3, you should be able to rectify this. There's a button configuration you can press to force PAL mode. Check the readme documentation.

Try holding abxy during boot up to reset the defaults on the chip.

If that doesn't work, get the .rar @ Xbins (search Xbox-scene.com for tutorial) Download the bios rar (3029,3108,etc..) and you will have it.

It's not an X3 reset issue.

The file I was referring to was changelog.txt - sorry! was at work when I posted..

quick button combo to set to ntsc: left trigger + X
quick button combo to set to pal: left trigger + Y

Try the relevent one :)

hey Martin, I really appreciate your help (patience) here, but I tried both options ie... holding left trigger + Y while booting and nothing seems to change. Am I doing this right?

I believe you have to hold the buttons until the Xbox reboots...

If you still cannot get it to work, you should be able to blindly work through X3 Config Live - I have the button sequence somewhere..

well as it looks now, i have to blindly step through this as according to the guy that helped me flash and setup this box states, and I agree that it is changed within the ms settings rather than the X3 Config Live. The problem is we dont know the key configuration to do this. If you can find yours or know anybody who can help step me through this, I 'd gladly pay for yours or their support.

If I had to be instructed on which buttons to push to resolve this, I would say Beams system is just like mine. X3, v1.6b, xbmc dash (pre-mod). I didn't have enough time to memorize any steps, but if you could tell me which ones to press from boot-up & X3 Config Live to the point of changing the video back to ntsc-u or PAL this should do it as sound and lights are correctly booting.

For X3 BIOS, try this:

Boot Xbox while holding White button.

Wait 30 seconds (if you cannot see anything on screen) or wait until you can see at least something that resembles X3CL.

Press the D-Pad DOWN 4 times. Press A.
Press the D-Pad DOWN once. Press A.

For PAL, press A
For NTSC, press the D-Pad DOWN once. Press A.

Power Cycle (switch off / on) Xbox.

If you don't have the X3 BIOS, then you need the enigmah videomode switchdisk. Search the forums/web for 'enigmah'.
