had problems trying to flash bios because my phillips drive was not recognising cdrw disks i tried 3 brands in the end got it to work by hotswapping with my pc drive.

have been reading up for days and noticed a few article about tweaking the pot on the drive to get it to read most media so i got out my multimeter and tried to be as carefull as possible and guess what after tweaking the pot just like it said here :-

still would not read any of the 3 disks on different media i had burned,so i put the pot back to same permanant marker marked position and lo and behold wouldnt load anything not even an original.didnt take the drive out just removed the lid in xbox and used multimeter and adjusted screw didnt touch anything else.

I reckon the laser is burnt out thought about getting a replacement laser head from ebay for £9:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20387&item=8194633487&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

but in the end decided to order this brand new phillips drive:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20387&item=8194633487&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

did i make the right choice in buying the drive or should i have tried replacing the laser?

Lasers are hard to replace... lots of solder points and it's easy to screw up...

with the price of DVD drives being what they are... you made the right choice in buying one...

my suggestion is to network your xbox and FTP your data... it'll cost you $15 for a cross over cable and is soooo easier!!;)
