not sure if this has been posted before, but here it is.
upon searching the internet I have found an organization of people called the FREE60 project. ( http://wiki.free60.org/ )
Free60 is a project towards porting GNU/Linux, BSD, Darwin and related open-source operating systems to the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console.

what these people are doing is Amazing and its a MUST READ.

Kernel 4552 through 6683 (the latest) can still be downgraded! (microsoft thought they could stop linux but all we have to do is downgrade our kernal!)

There is no information at this time that leads us to believe the hard drive is encrypted, there are plenty of clear text entries that can be read.

only good can come out of the free60 project im looking forward to 360 linux.

US courts have held (in at least four separate cases) that Copyright cannot be used to prevent inter operation. that means all of this reverse engineering is legal :lol:

Yes, this has been going on for just over a year now. You should note that not ALL consoles can be downgraded. They have revised the base kernel of newer consoles to make them undowngradeable (so far), and others where the cpu/gpu is not supported by the base kernel/filesystem (1888). So, most if not all older consoles can be downgrade and subsequently upgraded to run Linux. Majority of new consoles can not be downgraded (yet).

If you truely want linux on your 360, then why wait! There isnt a whole lot to offer (yet) but it is indeed interesting to have Linux boot on your 360.

- Something like X-Box media center. (http://xbmc.org/)

- Use the X-Box 360 as a low cost computer. (and sponsorized by microsoft...)

- Adding something like "MAME" http://mamedev.org/ - So you can play most of the arcade games on your X-Box 360.

Not to mention websurfing, downloads, watching videos, playing old emulators...heck even post messages on 360mods from your 360!

that sucks by the time that it comes out for the newer versions the next system will be out so either way it sucks

eh, imo hd xbmc makes it worth it on its own.

I like not having a dvd drive. Not really linux related. Playing games with no disc is phenominal though. I replaced the drive with a fan, I do not care about bumming dvd power anymore.

*Edit* Though I only play rockband so that is all I have installed lol.

can you point me where to find info about what is nessecary to do to play 360 games from usb hard drive

i thought info would be in this section of this website but im not finding it
or any kind of guide

i will probably hit a huge road block even if i find the info but i want to at least try or learn more

Wait, Am I reading this right? Can non jtag-able 360's run this linux kernel?
