Hi folks,

Just wondering, i have burn't my evox.ini, evoxdash.xbe & 100mb dummy file as an xiso to a dvd-r. As i do not yet have the necessary cables to hook my pc up to my xbox i was thinking of sticking in the disc in the meantime to check if it works. & to get the IP address in advance.

If i do this and then remove it without following through with FTP'ing files to the c:\ will my xbox just return to its original settings or will it fu*k it up (for the lack of a better term)

Cheers

Hey,
Here's a late Xmas present for you.

You don't have to FTP into the xbox to add apps, dashboards and such.

All you have to do is make a boot disc with boxplorer in the root of the disc. Then you add all the apps and stuff you want in folders on the disc. Now the discs hold a lot of memory so you can really load it up. Xbox Media Center, Dashboards, applications, emulators. load that baby up.
Go to xbins and go to town.

Then when you boot the disc you use Boxplorer to transfer the files.

gotta change the boot path in the bios is all.
Please clarify what you mean here because i have read vast amounts of tutorials on this subject and not one of them has told me to change my BIOS.......on top of that how the hell do you go about changing your bios?

Floppy - Is there a guide on using that piece of software you mentioned? It sounds like my cup of tea. Including How to make a boot disc with said program in the root? btw i have Nero. I also assume that everything on the disc would need to be in xiso format all lumped together?

Finally, if i proceed via the FTP route if i were to put the disc in just to see if it works, then remove it will it actually change anything on my system? I assume not and once disc is removed my box will boot up as normal via standard x4983 bios.

Cheers

If you start your system with just a boot disk, by the looks of it, an EvoX boot disk, that is fine. Once you take the disk out, it will work normal, and you can put the boot disk back in when ever you want.

Note: if you haven't flashed your bios, and just the Cromwell screen is coming up, don't put your boot disk in. You have to flash your bios first, and there are a lot of tutorials and question/answers around here for that.

If you have the X3 chip you can change the boot path in Config Live. That's what Sage was talking about.

What I mentioned wasn't software. Just another option for transfering to the xbox. It's not a very good way, in my opinion, I just wanted to give you the option.
The xbox looks for a DEFAULT.XBE file when a disc is put in. That's why every xbox program has a default.xbe file. And if it doesn't that's why you change it before you burn the disc.
It doesn't matter what the program is, if there's a DEFAULT.XBE file on the root of the disc it will boot that program. In this case the program is a file manager called BOXPLORER.
It allows you to navigate between the D (DVD) drive and the C (XBOX) drive and transfer files.
If you burn programs in folders on the disc then you can easily select them for transfer to the xbox.

A boot disc does not change anything on the xbox. Everything that it stores in memory is erased when the program is ended.

Cheers guys for your help.

i did stick the disc in anyway and it worked eventually, after 4 attempts at burning the damn thing i realised that on a disc it has to be default.xbe, but when you transfer it to the harddrive permanently it has to be evoxdash.xbe!!!

Phew that bit sorted, now for installing a network card into the p.c. so i can ftp across. FTP'ing seems to be the most complete way of doing things so i will give it a bash as i would like to back up my discs as my kids tend to use them as frisbees when i am at work!!!
