I got a very nice Aoyue Int 937 digital soldering station with a variable temperature setting on it fairly cheap from amazon. Its really nice, makes soldering a breeze, and is probably the best iron I've owned hands down. Weller makes some allright stuff to, the more money you put in something from weller the better the quality will be.

And I use .015" 62/36/2 Silver-Bearing Solder I picked up from radio shack that works very well on small electronics and xbox stuff. I used to use 60/40 rosin core solder but I found the other stuff a little easier to manage and goes on a little cleaner.

It's always down to preference. It also worries the crap out of me that guys who are about to start to mess with electronics and modding have to ask what kind of soldering iron to buy when they are about to attack their $300 gaming system.

I've used dozens of irons - they all work, its down to your skill.

Also a simple search would have found our recommendations for soldering here on the forums.

Soldering Iron: Anything from 15w to 30w with a very fine tip (Perfect for beginners. Anything hotter / heavier and you risk damaging the PCB unless you are experienced) - Weller is a recommended brand.
Solder: .032" 60/40 Rosin-Core Solder is recommended
Flux - It is VERY important that you use flux when soldering. I personally use a Chemtronics No-Clean Flux Dispensing Pen.
