A "2 hr professional jtag installation $$$" has turned into a 3 week ordeal.. The unit is an older xbox 360 and I believe he said Jasper.

It worked for 1 reboot at home before rrod nightmares.

3 weeks later the local "pro" installer still can't get the unit reliably booting.

50% of the time it would boot properly and play backup discs perfect for hours.
50% it would rrod, IT NEVER RROD before the install.
The xexmenu is black if I attempt to access it on a clean boot.

The installer showed me the clean wiring and yes it looked clean. He only had the coolrunner mounted with none of the other smaller boards I've seen in the instruction.

He said the other boards are not required if you know how to solder properly.

Well, the unit is still in his shop and I'm wondering if this is true?

The latest update is that he said he added caps but still having problems.
I told him most comments here point to programming the cool runner wrong.

As a newbie I'm not sure if the information he is giving me is reliable.

This is what happened when originally got it home:

1) Booted fine, xexmenu allowed me to create a GAMES directory.
2) Backup went perfect.
3) Played from HD perfect for 3 mins than froze.
4) RROD on reboot
5) Booted finally but xexmenu screen black.
6) Backup discs work perfect if clean boot

Now:
50% rrods on boot
No access to xexmenu or hd...

Thank you for comments

As its still sleeping at the installation shop collecting dust I unfortunately am unable to take pictures.

I know this doesn't help very much.

I appreciate the replies.

The installation has officially gone from bad to brutal.

297Chip's latest "tweaking" now has rendered the machine un-bootable even with jtag removed! The installer said the the cap may have damaged the mb.

I was hoping just to write-off the $220 paid to 297Chip but they now report the machine is dead.

Swallow the cost of a new machine too?

I have no choice but to just leave it there...

Xexmenu is very buggy and can be picky if it doesn't like how you arrange your folders etc. When it is booting to a black screen try inserting a pen drive into the usb port before running it and if it runs delete your games foler and see if it works correctly.

Thats if you get it repaired

I would get your console back and let someone else look at it. It sounds to me as if your pro is no pro at all.

I agree that it sounds like a STBY_CLK which is a newby mistake and can be repaired but it needs to be done by a competent person.

I appreciate the feedback here as its awesome. I'm pretty sure with the forums help I could fix it as I used to mod wii's etc. but never watched the xbox scene. After dremelling wii chips for mods and using hair thickness wire I retired from the scene.

I wasn't fluent with the xbox stuff so I thought I'd just take it to the local installer and not have to worry about. I don't have any of the xbox programming equipment and this old dog's micro soldering is behind me.

I'm kinda in a catch-22 as I'd love the machine back but its his responsibility still and his warranty. Of course it may collect dust for months but, it is what it is.

Its hard to explain but yelling or threatening the guy really wouldn't do much.
