The minute you do anything to a stock Xbox, it really is a gimic ... some mods increase functionality (like adding a mod chip, and a larger HDD), some are for aestetics (LEDs, paint jobs), some fall between the two (like the LCD).
Apps like XBMC can make use of the LCD. In that case, they can work like an MP3 jukebox, displaying track information, etc.
To make real use of the LCD, the developer needs to code for it (like the X3 BIOS displaying bank/BIOS details, and XBMC displaying track information). Unless you are running linux on your xbox, most apps you will run (games) have no idea about the LCD.
So yes - it is a gimic. Just like the LCD screens made by all Xbox mod groups.
